Strathmore won 7th straight game 2-1 over USIU.
Lakers Hockey Club's bullish start to the second leg of the Kenya Hockey Union 2022 season continued with a 1-0 win over visiting Sliders at the Kisumu Day High School on Sunday morning.
Aurelia Opondo scored the all important goal in the third quarter to settle the tie. The Lakers, who beat the Amira Sailors 2-0 on Saturday at the same venue, moved to second on the table standings with 14 points.
The Kisumu-based outfit have now won a total of four matches, drawn two and lost two. The head coach Austin Tuju attributed the fine run to more training.
"We train more frequently nowadays compared to before when we only trained over the weekends due to lack of finances. As you know most of our players are university students, so assembling them for training is quite costly, we spend up to Ksh 25,000 every week to get them together. We want to thank well-wishers who have come on board to ensure the girls have an extra day of training," Tuju told Mozzart Sport.
Lakers travel to Nairobi next week for two high profile games against leaders Strathmore University and USIU Ladies. Tuju hopes they can continue with the winning streak and challenge for the title.
"Nothing is impossible, we only need to win our games and hope that the opponents falter, I feel we can do it to bring the hockey glory back home."
In their first appearance in the top-flight last year, Lakers finished fourth. "In the event we don't win the league and finish second or third, it would still be a big achievement for us."
In other games of the weekend, leaders Strathmore won their seventh straight match, edging out USIU 2-1.
