Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has pledged to collaborate with all stakeholders to enhance the growth of Kenyan sports.

The former Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy made these remarks after officially assuming office at Talanta Plaza on Tuesday.

He takes over from Kipchumba Murkomen, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Interior, National Government, and Security.

During the brief handover ceremony, Mvurya expressed eagerness to build on the successes of his predecessors.

He assured the nation that Kenya is fully committed to hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN), saying, “It’s on my mind.”

Kenya will co-host CHAN alongside Uganda and Tanzania from Saturday 1 to Friday 28 February. Construction works at the designated venues—Kasarani and Nyayo Stadia—and training facilities, including Kasarani Annex, Police Sacco Stadium, and Ulinzi Sports Complex, are underway.

On Tuesday, Mvurya toured the venues with his predecessor, Murkomen, and expressed satisfaction with the progress, affirming that preparations are on track.

Yesterday, I had a virtual meeting with my colleagues from Uganda and Tanzania, which I chaired. We confirmed that CHAN will proceed as planned, and Kenya will be ready to host the competition without any challenges,” he said.

Mvurya urged sports entities to prepare adequately for global competitions.

Our football colleagues should also prepare Harambee Stars to ensure the team excels in this tournament. I’m glad the Mapinduzi Cup is underway in Zanzibar, and I hope to cheer them on in the finals,” Mvurya said as quoted Capital Sports.

He further promised to offer leadership support to sports institutions in fulfilling their mandates.

“I will work closely with all of you to provide the necessary leadership and support needed to achieve your goals,” Mvurya assured.

In his remarks, Murkomen urged Mvurya to take a firm stance against rogue sports federations.

As a politician, you will have to be tough and confront various challenges to ensure sports federations are well managed. Since we unlocked FKF, you will need to unlock other federations so that more young Kenyans can exploit their talents,” Murkomen said.
