The 2022 Wimbledon junior girls’ doubles champion, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s brightest tennis prospects, is appealing for both local and international backing as she prepares to step deeper into the highly competitive professional circuit.

Okutoyi is currently studying at Auburn University in Alabama, United States, on a full scholarship, balancing her academic commitments with competition on the ITF professional tour.

Since November 2022, she has captured 17 titles and reached 26 finals, achievements that have helped her rise to career-high rankings of 414 in singles and 223 in doubles.

She is also ranked seventh in Africa, having beaten five of the six players placed above her over the last two years.

Despite these milestones, the financial realities of professional tennis remain a major hurdle.

Only the top 125 players globally typically earn enough prize money to offset the high costs of competing at the highest level.

For Okutoyi, those expenses, including travel, coaching, accommodation, medical reports, and training, are estimated at close to Ksh40 million annually.

“I believe in my ability to get to the top. I certainly have the determination to do so. But ability and determination alone cannot be enough.

For me to compete on a level playing field, I will need at least Ksh40 million per annum to cover the costs of my coaching team,” she said.

Through the crowdfunding initiative, Okutoyi hopes to raise Ksh10 million, with supporters invited to contribute any amount via her campaign page, which also documents her journey in the sport.

Donors contributing above certain thresholds will receive special-edition merchandise, including t-shirts and hoodies, as tokens of appreciation.

The campaign complements other support she has begun securing. Okutoyi revealed she has already landed one corporate sponsor and is in discussions with physiotherapy and nutrition partners.

Institutional backing has also been forthcoming. The government, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, has pledged full support for her professional tour, including covering costs such as flights, coaching, fees and equipment.

Meanwhile, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) awarded her an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship in January 2026, valued at approximately Ksh6.5 million, which provides targeted technical and financial assistance through August 2028.
