Gideon Tarus led his side to a straight-sets win on Friday before James Ontere returned the favour with a 3-1 dominant show against the paramilitary side on Saturday to set up the winner-takes-all decider.
On Saturday, KPA got their comeback off to a good start, matching GSU point-for-point, but it was the Dockers who took the set 25-23 to keep their maiden title hopes alive. In the second set, GSU came from behind to level the sets with a 25-23 show.
KPA would, however, unlock a different level for the third set, Chris Owala leading the onslaught as the Mombasa-based side raced to a 25-16 show to take a 2-1 advantage.
In the final set, the soldiers put up a fight, but there was no stopping Ontere’s charges, out to clinch a maiden league title as they took the set 25-19, setting the stage for what is expected to be an epic clash on Sunday.
“It was a must-win match for us, and I am glad we delivered. One more to go,” said KPA’s Ontere.
On his part, GSU’s Tarus said his systems did not work. “We will come back on Sunday energized and ready to fight. KPA punished us for simple mistakes, and we have to counter that.”
