The boxer has acquired a management team to handle his career

Kenyan boxer and African Boxing Union middleweight champion Rayton ‘Boom Boom’ Okwiri has signed an agreement with a trio of professionals who will manage his career henceforth.

In a trail-blazing move made on Monday in the presence of Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) President Reuben Ndolo, Okwiri announced the appointments of a General Manager (Cliff Mboya), Brand Manager (Tim Adeka) and Legal Advisor (Mark Wakanyaga).

“This morning, I made my next move and appointed a management team to handle my boxing career matters,” Okwiri posted on his Facebook page. “That will allow me to fully focus on my training and fights.”

The announcement comes in the aftermath of Tanzanian pugilist Karim Mandonga’s trip to Kenya this month – one that opened up ideas and challenged Kenyan boxers to market their brands and respective bouts to their advantage.

“This has never been done before in Kenya and will be considered a first,” Okwiri wrote. “I would like to thank the team for pioneering this ideal opportunity for many young boxers who will benefit from this move.”

On his part, KPBC President Reuben Ndolo was ecstatic of the step made by Okwiri, upbeat by the commission’s ‘strong start to the year.’

“This [deal] is very good for boxing,” Ndolo said. “Boxers need this kind of support."

Drawing back from the hugely attended ‘Pocket Rocket Fight night’ – that saw Okwiri bag a points victory over Ally Ndaro - the former Makadara Member of Parliament remarked that such management and entertainment opportunities could be what Kenyan boxing needs to feed its ‘starved fan base.’

Tim Adeka, the Brand Manager believes the development will ensure Okwiri succeeds on and off the ring.

"This was adviced after looking at the past boxers who have failed to maximise on their full capacity when presented to opportunities outside their skills. These people will also work closely with his training team to ensure a smooth processes.. Also it ensures that the boxer is well managed to attain tangible success in and outside the boxing arena."

For Okwiri, his mission remains; ‘to turn a vision into a reality beyond the façade that comes from entertainment.’

And with that, “To bring a World Championship home,” he wrote.
