Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde is in trouble after punching an opponent in the parking lot after their heated La Liga duel

Provocations, insults and all sorts of bad words are just another part of football. Players engage in psychological warfare whenever they're on the pitch. Usually, it stays on the pitch and everyone forgets about it as soon as the final whistle is blown. But there are times when players lose control. Case in point, Federico Valverde.

Real Madrid's Uruguayan midfielder was in a foul mood following his team's loss to Villarreal at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, so he approached the Yellow Sumbarine's 21-year-old player Alex Baena and punched him in the face after the latter had made vile comments to the Uruguayan about his wife, son and another unborn child.

The feud goes back some time. When the teams met in the Copa del Rey in January, Baena allegedly tackled Valverde and told him he should start crying because his son wouldn't be born. The South American kept his cool that time, but Baena seemingly crossed the line again and made Valverde lose it.

On Saturday night, Baena insulted Valverde's three-year-old son and said nasty things about his pregnant wife and unborn baby. He made a crying gesture toward Fede about his wife's recent miscarriage scare. It was too much. Valverde tried to hit the foul-mouted opponent during the match, but he couldn't and told him he would wait for him outside because family comes before everything else.

The incident occurred in the stadium's car park area, where Baena and several other visiting team members were waiting for their transportation. Valverde raced to him and shouted these words before punching him.

"Tell me now what you told me about my son on the pitch! Repeat to me what you said. Don't mess with my family again!"

Baena has since denied the accusations.

Valverde's entourage has acknowledged that the Real Madrid midfielder hit Baena, which could open him up to sanctions if the Villarreal youngster decides to pursue the matter. Furthermore, several eyewitness are said to have seen the incident, and there are claims that it was also caught by a security camera.

Whatever was said on the pitch, Valverde could be in serious trouble - and it all depends on whether Baena decides to report the incident - and to whom: the La Liga Competition Committee or the police. If the matter reaches police, Valverde would be criminally charged. Some sources in Spain claim that police is already on the case, but it's yet to be confirmed.

It's now all up to Baena, who was filmed with a big bruise on his cheek.

In the meantime, Valverde will continue preparations for Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Chelsea on Wednesday.
