KCB defender Hannif Wesonga believes that the good start to the season is a sign of good things to come, even as he aims to land the Young Player of the Season award.
Despite being a centre back, Wesonga has two goals and an assist in six league rounds due to his overlapping tendencies.
The 20-year-old found the back of the net in their 2-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz and was on target in their 1-0 win over Muhoroni Youth, although the game wasn’t played up to the final whistle due to crowd trouble.
Wesonga, who can also play as a right back, bagged an assist in their 1-0 win over the AFC Leopards, as his flick was finished by Derrick Otanga.
The young defender says the goal returns he has had so far, as well as the cleansheets KCB have kept, give him the confidence to set sights on the individual award.
“I have had a good season so far. I have been scoring and helping the team keep clean sheets against tough opponents. I want to keep on giving my best, and hopefully I will win the individual award at the end of the season,” said Wesonga.
The player is in his second season in the top flight, having joined the bankers last year, months after finishing his studies at Musingu High School.
Despite the presence of other senior centre backs in the team, he has cemented a place in the first team.
He attributes his rise to hard work and the determination to make a successful career out of football.
“I honestly prefer to play as a centre back over a right back. I am, however, always ready to play anywhere in the back line, depending on where the coach wants to deploy me. I have been working hard in training, and so far, so good,” he added.
Wesonga will be looking forward to adding to his tally when the bankers next take on the soliders, Ulinzi Stars.
