The match between Muhoroni Youth and KCB FC at the Muhoroni Stadium has been abandoned in the 90th minute due to crowd trouble, and the club is now facing serious sanctions from the federation.
Defender Haniff Wesonga’s first-half header from a Herrit Mungai freekick delivery in the 33rd minute put the Bankers on the driving seat until the 90th minute, when the match was abandoned due to crowd trouble.
A section of Muhoroni Youth fans stormed the pitch, baying for KCB’s technical bench members, whom police officers manning the game had to protect. Pictures online show a handful of supporters charging towards the Bernard Mwalala-led technical bench with the intention of attacking them. The motive remains unknown.
“Play stopped. The match stopped due to crowd trouble. Fans invasion into the pitch to attack our technical bench,” read a social media post from the Bankers.
After some time, the referees decided that it was not safe to continue with the game and called it off. The federation’s League and Competitions’ Committee is expected to make a ruling on the matter.
“The referee has made the call to abandon the match with just a few minutes of play left due to hooliganism and crowd trouble. We were leading the match by a solitary goal from Haniff Wesonga, which came in the 33rd minute of the match.”
The Bankers will certainly be awarded the match by the committee, and Muhoroni Youth are likely to face further sanctions from the League and Competitions Committee.
Last year, when the AFC Leopards abandoned their match against the Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, they were slapped with some serious sanctions. The match was abandoned in the first half after Ingwe attacked the referee over perceived bias.
Ingwe were docked three points, slapped with a Ksh 500,000 fine, and ordered to play their next four games behind closed doors.
When the playoff match between Zoo FC and Nairobi United aborted, the Kericho-based club lost the game, were docked a further three points, were slapped with a KES 300,000 fine, and were ordered to play five home matches behind closed doors.
