WC Countdown: It's time for true Africa champions to let out their roar

Lions of Teranga have an opportunity to showcase their true quality—both through their undeniable talent and their sense of defiance—and perhaps even spring a surprise along the way
Senegal arrives in North America not merely to participate, but to challenge the established order of world football. With a population of just over 16 million, the nation has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the sport, highlighted by its historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph—a title that was later stripped away and controversially awarded to host nation Morocco. Yet no ruling can erase what everyone witnessed on the pitch: Senegal earned that trophy through its performances. Where the silverware ultimately resides matters far less than the reality of how it was won.
The 2026 World Cup represents an important turning point for the national team. A new generation is ready to gradually assume greater responsibility from veterans such as Sadio Mane, ensuring that Senegal's ambitions extend well beyond the current tournament.
The team's playing style has also evolved, increasingly resembling the modern, high-level football seen among the world's elite nations. While the midfield, led by Idrissa Gueye, has long served as the heartbeat of the side, this new Senegal is built on defensive solidity, athleticism, and explosive pace in wide areas.
Another notable strength has emerged in recent years: Senegal's ability to thrive under pressure. Whether in extra time or penalty shootouts, the Lions of Teranga have repeatedly shown composure when the stakes are at their highest.
Expectations back home remain enormous, as they always are, but this is a squad designed for major occasions. North America will witness a team that blends African flair with European discipline—a combination that makes Senegal one of the tournament's most intriguing contenders. They will certainly be entertaining to watch; the question now is just how far they can go.
Road to the World Cup
Despite the disappointment of losing their AFCON title through administrative proceedings, Senegal produced an impressive qualifying campaign. Pape Thiaw's side navigated the process unbeaten, collecting seven victories from ten matches and finishing ahead of DR Congo to secure a direct ticket to the World Cup.
While the results were excellent, the performances were rarely spectacular. Outside of comfortable wins against South Sudan and Mauritania, Senegal often relied on discipline and efficiency rather than attacking fireworks. Their defensive organization proved particularly important, with just three goals conceded throughout qualification, while timely goals at the opposite end helped them consistently pick up points.
Manager: Pape Thiaw
Thiaw remains one of the more intriguing coaches at the tournament. Prior to taking charge of the national team in December 2024, his managerial résumé was relatively modest, consisting mainly of a spell with Senegalese club Niarry Tally and work with Senegal's domestic-based national side.
Yet his short tenure with the senior team has produced impressive results. An unbeaten World Cup qualifying run and a near AFCON triumph have strengthened his reputation considerably.
The biggest question heading into the tournament concerns his ability to navigate difficult moments under intense pressure. The controversial AFCON final against Morocco showcased both his passion and his willingness to stand by his players, but the World Cup will provide the ultimate test of his leadership.

The face of this Senegal side remains Sadio Mane. The former Liverpool star has won virtually everything at club level and also delivered continental glory for his country by helping Senegal lift the Africa Cup of Nations. A captain, leader, role model, and national icon, Mane is arguably the most recognizable Senegalese person on the planet.
At 34, there is no guarantee he will still be playing at the highest level by the time the next World Cup comes around, making this tournament a potential last dance on football’s grandest stage. If that proves to be the case, expect Senegal’s talismanic winger to leave absolutely everything on the pitch for his nation.
Rising star: Iliman Ndiaye
Iliman Ndiaye is widely viewed as the future creative leader of the national team and one of the players expected to carry Senegal into its next generation. His development has been impressive year after year, with the attacking midfielder combining flair in possession with an excellent work ethic off the ball.
A major transfer to one of Europe’s elite clubs feels more like a matter of when than if. Quick, agile, and capable of unlocking even the most stubborn defenses with a single moment of inspiration, Ndiaye possesses all the tools required to become Senegal’s next superstar.
Predicted XI (4-3-3)
Mendy - Diakhate, Koulibaly, Niakhate, Diouf - Idrissa Gueye, Pape Gueye, Diarra - Ndiaye, Mane, Jackson.
Kits
Senegal will once again sport one of the tournament's most distinctive color schemes. The home kit features a vibrant green base with gold accents, while the away strip is predominantly white, complemented by green and gold detailing.

Senegal are no longer viewed as dangerous outsiders lurking in the shadows. They have evolved into one of Africa’s genuine contenders and arrive at the World Cup with legitimate ambitions of making a deep run.
Reaching the Round of 16 would represent a solid and realistic objective, but given their tournament pedigree and experience, a quarter-final appearance would hardly shock anyone. If they can navigate the group stage without major injuries, their disciplined approach and ability to grind out results make them an opponent few teams will be eager to face in the knockout rounds, regardless of the name on the other side of the bracket.
