Thomas Wainaina foresees some improvements in his numbers this season at Bidco United FC, despite the team having a slow start to the 2023/24 FKF Premier League campaign.

The gifted left-back was involved in seven goals for the side last season, scoring twice and assisting five times but he wants this to improve this season.

Coach Anthony Akhulia’s side finished a precarious 13th position on the log last campaign, just seven points above Wazito (now Muhoroni) who had to head into the play-offs in order to retain their premier league status.

Wainaina knows that if his numbers improve, so will Bidco’s.

‘’Generally, for a defender I wouldn’t say they were not satisfactory but I think I can improve on them, and I hope to do so,’’ says the 25-year-old.

Bidco are yet to pick a win, drawing against Posta Rangers on the opening day before coming from behind to stall Nairobi City Stars.

They have however, opened up their goal scoring account courtesy of former Kenya Police forward Samuel Ndung’u. This is where it begins, Wainaina hopes.

‘’We’ve already started scoring goals and because we have a solid reputation as a team not easy to score against, we can build on this and start picking wins. Actually, that’s the aim.

We do not want to spend a lot of time in the mid-table, it’s a very dangerous zone,’’ continues the former Kakamega Homeboyz man.

United are among the sides with the most experienced players in the league. In their ranks are such familiar names as Said Tsuma, Peter Nzuki, Ezekiel Okare, Jacob Onyango, David Kalama, Samuel Ndung’u, Gabriel Wandera and Vincent Oduor.

The cumulative experience within this squad may have sustained them in the league last season but it seems coach Akhulia wants more.

Youngsters Douglas Mokaya and Musa Shariff are new inclusions in the team, exciting players Wainaina thinks.

‘’The team already has a ton of experience and youngsters coming in will give us a necessary blend so that we can adjust as per each match’s requirement. There are 34 matches in a season and each one of those usually present different challenges,’’ continues the defender.

‘’In the two matches we’ve played so far I think the newcomers have really added firepower in our attacks.’’

Bidco will next travel to Sudi stadium to face in-form Nzoia Sugar, a side that propelled Wainaina into the lime-light back in 2019.

Currently sitting 8th on two points from two matches, the Sudi trip- scheduled for Saturday 16th- gives Coach Akhulia’s men the acid test that can turn their season around. They’ll host FC Talanta after that.
