The Kenya international joined Zesco United at the end of January 2022
Former Wazito FC forward Vincent Oburu has opened up on the reality of playing in the Zambian Super League following his rather blistering start with his new Zesco United side where he became the latest Kenyan international to don the orange jersey.
At the tail end of January 2022, Oburu left Wazito FC for Zambia where he replaced compatriot Jesse Were who left the club after five years for another ZSL side, Kansanshi Dynamos. Unlike Were, however, Oburu was offered only a short term six month deal until June 2022 in an indication that the club was not too sure whether he could replace their all-time top scorer.
Without dwelling on the length of the contract though, Oburu went on with his business on the pitch and he scored his first goal at the club in only his second game that came against Nkana, an encounter that Zesco won 2-1.
After three games, Oburu has certainly earned praise at his new workstation for his work rate and slaloming runs forward. Despite the plaudits, the forward who has also played for 12 time champions AFC Leopards, opened up on his ambitions during his make or break deal with the reigning champions.
“The league here is very tough as compared to Kenya. It is more physical but am working very hard to cope with the situation and the demands. I want to do my best to help the team gain points and hopefully defend the title,” the player is quoted on Zesco’s website.
“I am learning a lot here from everyone. They have all welcomed me very well. The senior players have been helpful in helping me settle especially on the pitch and I am working very hard to adapt.”
Additionally, Oburu lauded his national team compatriots Ian Otieno, who is also his clubmate, and Were for their support and words of advise since his arrival in the new league.
“Were and Otieno have been very supportive. Ian has been pushing me so far, telling me how things work around here for me to perform well. I think I owe a lot to them,” he said.
As things stand, Zesco find themselves five points behind log leaders Red Arrows (49) after 25 matches played. In the nine games that remain before the season ends, it remains to be seen whether Zesco can reclaim top spot and whether Oburu can earn himself a longer contract at the club.
