Vihiga eye Kigali's scalp in second CECAFA Zone CAF WCL qualifiers group B match

Kigali lost their opener to Tanzania's JKT Queens

Kenyan champions Vihiga Queens will be seeking to register the second win in the group B of the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers – CECAFA Zone 2023 when they face Rwanda’s AS Kigali Women at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Kampala on Wednesday.

Vihiga kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 win over Zanzibar’s New Generation on Sunday and will hope to serve Kigali a similar dose and draw closer to the knockout stages.

Goals from Winnie Babirye, Ruth Khasokha and Martha Amunyolet were enough to get the job done for the Kenyan girls against New Generations who got their consolation through Amina Hemed.

Despite starting the tournament well, coach Charles Okere says there is no time to celebrate the win as tougher task awaits the team in the subsequent group stage matches.

"We still have a lot of work to do in the remaining group matches,” he told CECAFA Media.

While Vihiga will be seeking the second group stage win, Kigali will be out to redeem themselves after falling in their opener.

Tanzania’s JKT Queens who are also in group B battled from a goal down to stop Kigali .

Diane Nyirandagijimana gave the Rwanda Women’s Premier League champions the lead after only 3 minutes in a match played at the.

The two teams continued to create scoring opportunities, but it was JKT Queens who leveled matters through Abdallah Stumai a minute into added time going into the break.

After the interval AS Kigali tried to press deep again as they pushed to try and regain their lead. It was JKT Queens who were more clinical when Donisia Daniel Minja scored after 70 minutes.

Meanwhile, Buja Queens and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) registered important wins in Group A matches played on Tuesday.

The Burundi Women’s Premier League champions shocked home side Kampala Queens 2-1 in the first match played at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

After losing their opening match 2-1 to the Ethiopian side in the opening match, Buja Queens came all out from the start charged and showing high level of determination to win the match.

Kenyan international Topister Situma put Buja Queens ahead with 21 minutes with a well timed header. The home side tried to push forward, but failed to break Buja Queens’ defending line.

Buja Queens came close again after 31 minutes, but Elizabeth Wambui’s effort from close range missed the target. Fazila Ikwaput also missed a chance to level matters for Kampala Queens when he shot was saved after 40 minutes.

After the interval Situma scored her second goal on 53 minutes, but Elizabeth Nakigozi pulled a goal back for Kampala Queens with a well taken free-kick after 83 minutes.

In the second Group A match CBE were a class apart when they humbled Djibouti’s FAD FC 8-0.

Senaf Wakuma Demise and substitute Ariet Odong Ojho each netted a brace for the Ethiopians, while Argash Kalsa Tadesse, Loza Abera, Nardos Getnet Mekonnen and Birra Etsegenet Bizuneh also had a goal each on the score sheet.

CBE FC remain top of Group A with 6 points, while Buja Queens and Kampala Queens each have 3 points, and FAD FC are bottom of the log.
