Chelsea have announced the signing of Sporting Lisbon's Geovany Quenda

Chelsea have officially completed the signing of highly-rated Portuguese youngster of Guinea-Bissau origins Geovany Quenda from Sporting in a deal worth £40 million, with the versatile attacker putting pen to paper on an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Although the transfer was only confirmed now, Quenda had already agreed to join the Blues back in March 2025 during Enzo Maresca's reign. The 19-year-old now becomes the second player to arrive under new head coach Xabi Alonso, following the capture of Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

Quenda arrives in west London after an impressive breakthrough at Sporting, where he made 86 senior appearances, including 16 in the Champions League. Born in Guinea-Bissau, he moved to Portugal at the age of seven and had to adapt quickly to a new environment.

His rapid rise began under former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, who handed him his first-team opportunity.

Capable of operating on either wing, as an attacking midfielder or even as a wing-back, Quenda is expected to compete for a place in Alonso's first-team squad immediately. Reports indicate he has already spent time training at Chelsea's Cobham headquarters ahead of the squad's official return for pre-season.

The Portugal Under-21 international admitted he cannot wait to begin the next chapter of his career.

"It feels great to be here," Quenda said after the announcement. "Chelsea is a great team and I am excited to play here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me and I am proud to be here.

"I am excited to work with my team-mates and the manager, Xabi Alonso. I'm a very hard-working young person and I like to help my team. I want to be someone known for having the right mentality to help my team-mates and who does their best for the club to win trophies."

Chelsea's activity in the transfer market is far from over. The Blues have held discussions over Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria, explored a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix and were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Meanwhile, sources in France and Argentina suggest Valentin Barco is closing in on a move to Chelsea after confirming his departure from sister club Strasbourg.

There has also been significant movement in the opposite direction. Marc Cucurella has completed a switch to Real Madrid, Tyrique George has joined Everton, while Andrey Santos is on the verge of signing for Manchester United after the clubs reached an agreement worth £50 million.

Chelsea also confirmed academy prospect Jesse Derry has committed his future to the club by signing a new six-year contract before heading to Sporting on loan for the upcoming season.
