His slow build comes to test on Wednesday against Mathare United at Dandora Stadium (1500 EAT)

Despite his team kicking off the season with two straight defeats, Tusker FC head coach Charles Okere is still one of the most optimistic men around Ruaraka, holding on to the belief that under him, things will get better.

Okere, in his second season with Tusker as permanent manager, has had a rough start to the 2025/26 season after watching his side lose to KCB FC and Posta Rangers, respectively.

A section of the club supporters voiced their displeasure with the coach on the opening day defeat, and in an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport on Monday, 28 September, Tusker chairman Charles Gacheru described the results as a “real alarm bell”.

However, Okere, still in situ for Wednesday’s meeting with Mathare United at Dandora Stadium (1500 EAT), sees things differently.

“It's a tough start to the league, two losses in a row, that is nothing to smile about,” Okere said in an interview with the club's media.

“But again, we should talk about the positives also - we had a good preseason, and we showed some positive signs. I think that team building is a process, and we have to be patient for some time so that we can get the results.”

A consistent theme this season for Tusker is their vulnerable defense, which has already conceded four goals, while their attack, despite creating multiple chances, has scored just once.

“We have conceded from mistakes that we can easily avoid during match situations,” Okere said about his defense.

“As a team, I believe we have to be as compact as possible and do better in preventing goals. We have to defend aggressively closer to our goal.”

A test on how far his slow build has progressed comes up against John Kamau’s Mathare United, who stunned KCB FC last weekend.

“They (Mathare) are a worthy opponent with quality technical players,” Okere said. “I believe we can match their quality. If we approach cautiously, we will get positive results. Tomorrow (Wednesday), we will turn the tables.”

Only time will tell.
