The tournament is mainly sponsored by Tusker FC winger Ian Simiyu, who has partnered with a couple of friends to establish a homegrown tourney.
This inaugural edition brings together eight teams drawn from the Nzoia Sugar region who will battle out in knockout matches until a winner is found on the last day.
The winners will walk home with cash and a customised trophy, while all the first four teams will win jerseys and balls that will be presented at the closing ceremony.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Simiyu explained the motivation behind the tournament.
“This has been a lifelong dream for both myself and my friends. We wanted to have a homegrown tournament by ourselves that is not sponsored by any politician, as is the case with the many going on at this time,” said Simiyu.
Simiyu said that they are determined to have a tournament for the youth without many rules, where they can not only have an avenue of showcasing their talents but also interact with their mentors and established players who can guide the youngsters to the right path in their budding football careers.
“The tournament will equally provide an avenue for established players from the region to catch up and forge a structured and united effort in uplifting the younger generation,” he added.
The midfielder, who revealed that he received support from some of his Tusker teammates, has partnered with Kenya Police midfielder Daniel Musamali, former Nzoia Sugar FC midfielder Benjamin Muchuma, as well as retired Emmanuel Juma, among others.
Simiyu has been one of the bright stars shining at Tusker FC and has been instrumental in the Brewers placing second in the FKF Premier League with 24 points, the same as league leaders AFC Leopards, who have a superior goal difference.
Most recently, Simiyu scored a brace to help Tusker secure a 2-0 victory over Sofapaka on Sunday, 14 December.
