South African football is in mourning following the shocking death of midfielder Jayden Adams, who has passed away at the age of 25 just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Adams, who played for Mamelodi Sundowns, featured in South Africa's opening two matches of the tournament and also made a late substitute appearance as Bafana Bafana secured their place in the Round of 32.

The nine-time South Africa international had only recently returned from the World Cup, where he started the opening defeat to Mexico before also featuring in the draw against the Czech Republic. His final appearance came as a substitute in the victory over South Korea, with South Africa eventually bowing out to co-hosts Canada on June 28.

The South African Football Players Union paid tribute to the midfielder, describing his death as an "immeasurable loss" to the country's football community.

"Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction," the union said in a statement.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched. South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer."

Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns last year. He made his senior international debut in 2024 and earned nine caps for South Africa during his career.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through South African football, with tributes continuing to pour in for a player whose career was only beginning to flourish.
