Over the last three years, the government has embarked on an ambitious sporting infrastructure development program, with at least 25 stadia upgraded to a minimum seating capacity of 10,000 across the country.
Thika Stadium, one of the most iconic and historic facilities in the central region, has not been left behind, with construction already ongoing.

The facility, which was initially being upgraded by the County Government of Kiambu, was taken over by the national government in order to upgrade its seating capacity and achieve a faster completion date.
According to the photos shared by the Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, the erection of the perimeter wall is complete, and so is the scraping of the previous playing surface to pave the way for a fresh laying of a new FIFA-standard playing field.
Works on the spectator stands are also ongoing, with the pillars that will be used to support the stands already visibly coming up across the facility. The stands will be made of concrete across the board, as required by both FIFA and CAF
Upon completion, the stadium will have a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators to attract more fans.

The stadium will also have an eight-lane tartan track that will be used by local athletes for training in order to sharpen their skills and competitiveness.
The main stand of the facility will have a VVIP dias and lounge for use by dignitaries as well as house sporting offices and modern FIFA-standard changing rooms.
The facility, which was commissioned by President William Ruto, will cost Ksh900 million upon completion.

Thika Stadium was home to defunct Thika United as well as Bidco United, who have since been relegated to the National Super League (NSL).
