James Ssetuba, an experienced goalkeeper, recently joined Kakamega Homeboyz from Tanzanian side Ihefu
Kakamega Homeboyz FC have - after an unprecedented 8th placing in the first half of the FKF Premier League - already made changes to the playing unit with the transfer window just three days old. Five players were unveiled by the club recently and among them is Ugandan goalkeeper Ssetuba James who returns to the Kenyan top flight from Tanzania.
The Patrick Odhiambo-coached side announced the signings of Kevin Amwayi, Dennis Sikhayi, Enock Masinza, Mohammed Adnan and Ssetuba on Wednesday evening- a move deemed as a replacement to the initial five players dropped at the start of the week.
Boasting a rich profile within the East African region, Ssetuba- previously with Sony Sugar FC in the FKFP - has been to such clubs as Uganda Revenue Authority, Wakiso Giants (who he helped promote into the Ugandan top flight) and more recently Ihefu FC of Tanzania.
He is a happy man returning to Kenya and intends to have an immediate impact.
‘’I am not new to the Kenyan Premier League and I’m very aware of the intensity in competition here. No team is small and everyone gives you a challenge. I remember vividly from days at SoNy Sugar,’’ says the 26 year old.
Homeboyz recently let go of long-serving goalkeeper Geoffrey Oputi during the mid-season and there was every indication that a formidable replacement was on his way. In his absence, Oputi was succeeded by 17-year old Ibrahim Wanzala who has filled in the high shoes despite his lack of experience.
Ssetuba is aware that he will have to work harder for a chance to start for Homeboyz.
‘’It’s never easy moving into a new team because there you have to fight your way up. There are players who have been there and done excellently so the competition is a healthy one," He said.
"The welcome within the team is good, I feel like family already and so I plan on working hard to earn my place,’’ he added.
Other names in Coach John Waw’s goalkeeping unit include Stephen Otieno who has been with the club for two seasons.
Ssetuba’s immediate former club Ihefu sits 8th on the Tanzanian Premier League log with 9 wins from 24 matches. He leaves them after half a season with the Mbeya City outfit.
