They described Mama Agatha as a pillar of her community, a guiding light whose wisdom extended beyond her household
The slow-paced town of Port Victoria in Busia County came alive on Saturday, 30 August, as a sea of mourners converged to celebrate the life of Mama Agatha Maina Namwamba, the mother of former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.
Mama Agatha, who passed away on Thursday, 7 August, was laid to rest in a ceremony themed “Celebration of an Accomplished Life.”
And accomplished it was. The glowing eulogies painted a picture of a resilient, loving, and supportive matriarch whose influence extended far beyond her family.
The burial turned into a rare gathering of leaders from all walks of life. National political heavyweights, county officials, and celebrated sports administrators all gathered to share the grief.
The sports fraternity, with which Ababu shared close ties during and after his tenure as Sports Cabinet Secretary, was well represented.
Among the notable figures were former Mombasa County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth, Gender and Sports Kenneth Ambani, Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) Chairman Thuo Cege, and KAS CEO Doreen Odhiambo, alongside other administrators.
Speaking on behalf of the sporting community, Ambani, a longtime friend of the Namwamba family, eulogized Mama Agatha as a woman who raised her children with faith and strength, values that now echo in their lives and leadership.
“Mama Agatha was not only a mother to Ababu and his siblings, she was a mother to this community and to all of us who knew her. We see that same spirit reflected in her children," he mourned.
Also in attendance were dignitaries from across the political spectrum, including presidential aspirant Professor George Wajackoyah, former Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’i and Susan Nakhumicha, Busia County Governor Paul Otuoma, and the area MCA.
They described Mama Agatha as a pillar of her community, a guiding light whose wisdom extended beyond her household, and a mother who embraced many with kindness.
The ceremony blended solemn prayers with moments of celebration, as choir groups sang uplifting hymns that reflected the day’s theme. Yesu Taling'aling'a by Milka Omondi, which was Mama Agatha's favorite song, entertained the mourners.
After the service, the casket was carried to its final resting place at the Namwamba homestead as emotions ran high for close family members, friends, and villagers.
Mozzart Sport joins the entire sporting fraternity in sending heartfelt condolences to the Namwamba family.
