Shabana’s Kiama condemns Kenya Police for ‘Daylight Extortion’ in match ticket prices

According to the ticketing information released by the hosts, Regular tickets will cost KSh 500, VIP KSh 2,500, and VVIP KSh 3,000, a steep jump that has angered Shabana supporters

Shabana FC Organizing Secretary Stephen Kiama has strongly criticized Kenya Police FC for what he terms “exorbitant and exploitative” ticket prices ahead of Sunday’s FKF Premier League clash at the Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi.

Speaking with visible frustration, Kiama accused the defending champions of attempting to lock out ordinary fans through inflated charges, calling on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to intervene before, in his words, “things get out of hand.”

There is something very wrong with what the Kenya Police have done. It is shocking and, honestly, unacceptable. Some clubs want to take advantage of others and limit fans from accessing match venues,” Kiama said.

According to the ticketing information released by the hosts, Regular tickets will cost KSh 500, VIP KSh 2,500, and VVIP KSh 3,000, a steep jump that has angered Shabana supporters, many of whom are expected to travel from Kisii.

Kiama questioned how a government institution using a government facility could justify such pricing.

How do you expect a fan from Kisii, already spending KSh 3,000 on bus fare, to pay another KSh 3,000 just to enter the stadium, and before they have even eaten? That is not right,” he argued.

He warned that such high charges risk undoing the renewed fan interest sparked by the 2024 CHAN tournament.

During CHAN, not even CAF or FKF charged KSh 3,000 or KSh 2,500 for fans. If the federation is not careful, we are going backwards,” he said.

Kiama further questioned the value of the ticket prices, given the current state of the Police Sacco grounds.

Police Sacco doesn’t even have a perimeter wall or proper stands. How do you charge KSh 3,000 for fans to sit in the sun the whole day? This is daylight extortion, and it must be stopped,” he added.

Shabana have long prided themselves on fan-friendly ticketing at Gusii Stadium, even during their National Super League days.

At Gusii Stadium, we have never charged KSh 2,500 or KSh 3,000. Our prices range between KSh 200 and 500. So, where is this money going when the Police charge such figures? They are spoiling our game,” Kiama insisted.

He appealed directly to FKF President Hussein Mohamed, FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga, and the federation leadership to act swiftly.

I am requesting President Hussein Mohamed and the NEC: please step in. Even your own events are charged at KSh 200 or 500. We agreed that stadiums must be filled again. How will fans come with these prices? Kindly intervene before it becomes worse,” he urged.

Both teams enter Sunday’s match carrying significant momentum.

Shabana were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Murang’a SEAL in a tense match played in Murang'a, while Kenya Police arrive buoyed by a dramatic midweek victory after substitute Exaule Misuri scored a stoppage-time winner to seal a 3-2 triumph over Bidco United.
