The tactician attributed the result to the hard work the players put in training, particularly in set pieces

Shabana FC head coach Peter Okidi has credited meticulous work on the training ground, particularly set-piece routines, for his side’s impressive victory over KCB on Saturday, 20 December.

Speaking during a post-match press conference aired on Azam TV, the experienced tactician revealed that both offensive and defensive set-piece drills were prioritised ahead of the clash, a strategy that ultimately proved decisive against a KCB side known for their aerial threat.

Shabana wasted no time asserting their dominance, breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute when Kevin Omundi capitalised on a well-worked free kick.

Humphrey Obino delivered a teasing ball into the area, allowing Omondi to slip between a crowded KCB defence and tap past goalkeeper Arnold Monzobo.

The visitors struck again just ten minutes later, once more from a set-piece situation.

Obina, who had turned provider for the opener, stepped up at the edge of the box and curled home a sumptuous free kick to double Shabana’s advantage and firmly swing momentum in their favour.

Okidi acknowledged that lessons from last season shaped their approach, noting that poor execution and defending of set-pieces had previously cost the club valuable points.

“We worked a lot on set-pieces because last season we struggled in that area and it affected us,” Okidi stated. “We knew KCB are very good at set-pieces, but they are also fragile when defending them. We took advantage of that, and it paid off.”

He further singled out the goalkeeping unit for praise, highlighting their role in neutralising KCB’s threat and maintaining defensive solidity throughout the contest.

“I must credit my goalkeeping department for the hard work they have put in together with the defence. Ensuring we do not concede from set-pieces against such an opponent is something to marvel at. It has also created healthy competition between the sticks,” he added.

The former Kakamega Homeboyz coach also made it clear that the Glamour Boys are now firmly setting their sights on the FKF Premier League title, insisting the ambition has been present since the start of the campaign.

Victory saw Shabana climb joint-top of the 18-team league standings on 23 points alongside Gor Mahia, although they sit second on goal difference.

“As we stated when the league started, we are here to compete,” Okidi said. “From today’s result, we are going fully out for the title. Every game must count now, and everyone at the club has to play their part to help us realise the dream.”

The match marked Shabana’s final fixture of the year, with the Kisii-based side wrapping up 2025 on a high and laying down a strong marker ahead of a competitive 2026 as they pursue a historic first-ever league crown.
