School Games: Kwanthanze, Cheptil lead charge as Volleyball, Basketball, Netball and Rugby 7s reach knockout stages

In Basketball 3x3, Sigalame Boys maintained their unbeaten record in Pool A with clinical wins over Chuka (21-6) and Pioneer (16-14), stamping their authority as early title contenders

Defending volleyball champions Kwanthanze Girls and Cheptil Boys continued their dominant run at the 2025 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two National Games, powering into the semifinals with perfect records after Match Day 3 action in Kakamega.

At Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Kwanthanze underlined their pedigree with a straight-sets win over Bishop Sulumeti (25-19, 25-21, 25-13) to top their group without dropping a set.

The Eastern Region queens will now face Soweto Girls from Nairobi in Friday’s semifinal.

In the boys’ category, Rift Valley giants Cheptil were equally ruthless, sweeping past Kambaa 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-14) to book a semifinal date with Coast’s Mwaluphamba.

The other boys’ semifinal will feature Western powerhouses Malava, who staged a sensational comeback to stun Mwaluphamba 3-2 after trailing by two sets.

Malava will face Gogo Secondary, who also advanced with a convincing win.

In other girls’ volleyball fixtures, Kesogon saw off Moi Forces 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-5) and will battle Bishop Sulumeti in the other semifinal.

Nyakongo concluded their group campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Eldas, while Soweto dispatched Kinale in similar fashion.

Gogo and Ruthimitu were among the standout performers in the boys’ pool rounds.

Gogo breezed past Furaha 3-0, while Ruthimitu defeated Gankanga with the same margin to confirm the last four line-up.

Basketball 3x3: Sigalame, St. Peter’s Mumias, Rapogi and Tigoi Impress

In Basketball 3x3, Sigalame Boys maintained their unbeaten record in Pool A with clinical wins over Chuka (21-6) and Pioneer (16-14), stamping their authority as early title contenders.

Pool A also saw Upper Hill edge Takaba 15-10, while Pioneer bounced back to beat St. Joseph’s 20-16 in a tight affair.

St. Mary’s Yala wrapped up their group stage on a high with a 12-10 win over Upper Hill.

In Pool B, St. Peter’s Mumias displayed flair and consistency, beating Malindi (20-15) and Nyeri High (12-3), though they stumbled in their final outing against a sharp Rapogi side (11-20).

Rapogi also dispatched Nairobi School and Laiser Hill in key encounters, underlining their growing threat.

Mbooni recorded mixed results, beating Nyeri and Wajir before falling to Laiser Hill, who ended the day strongly with big wins over Malindi and Mbooni.

Among the girls, Asumbi Girls handed St. Brigid’s their first loss of the competition with a 16-13 victory.

Sirakaru returned to winning ways with a 21-9 rout of Kaya Tiwi, while Loreto bagged important wins over Hon. DM Amin and St. Mary’s.

Pool B saw BuruBuru Girls edge Tigoi 12-11 in a top-of-the-table clash, only to fall to Ikutha by a single point.

Tigoi responded with a massive 21-0 demolition of Takaba. Ng’iya remained unbeaten with close wins over both MPesa Academy and St. John’s.

Netball: St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale Hit 151 Goals as Oyugi Ogango, Kaya Tiwi Advance

St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale continued their record-shattering campaign in netball with a jaw-dropping 151-4 win over Hon. DM Amin, further cementing their place as favourites to retain their crown.

The reigning champions have looked unplayable throughout the group phase.

In other matches, Oyugi Ogango from Nyanza turned on the style with a 65-39 win over Bhukokholo.

Coast heavyweights Kaya Tiwi bounced back to beat Kajiampau 69-10, while Central’s Kinale eased past St. Dorcas 45-21 to boost their qualification hopes.

Rugby 7s: Bwake Boys, Koyonzo, Bungoma, Yala March into Cup Quarters

The Rugby 7s competition is heating up, with the quarterfinal cast now confirmed after a thrilling round of group matches.

Defending champions Bwake Boys made a strong statement of intent, topping their pool with commanding wins over Lenana School (19-0), Marsabit (40-0), and Kitondo (19-5).

They will face Western Region’s Musingu in the Main Cup quarterfinals.

Also advancing are Koyonzo, Bungoma High School, St. Peter’s Mumias, Nairobi School, Yala School, Lenana, and Musingu.

Koyonzo closed out the pool stage with a hard-fought 19-12 win over St. Peters Mumias in a potential title-decider preview.

In the 9th-place classification playoffs, Marsabit will face Gede, Anjego take on Bishop, Laiser Hill meet Kitondo, while Mpesa Foundation Academy clash with Alliance High School.
