Harambee Stars return to action on Friday when they take on Madagascar in the quarterfinal at Kasarani.
FKF president Hussein Mohammed has lauded the impact of the monetary reward from President William Ruto, saying Harambee Stars’ fine run at the CHAN tournament has largely been inspired by the head of state’s unwavering support.

The Stars have defied the odds to top Group A after beating DR Congo, Morocco, and Zambia, while drawing with Angola to collect 10 out of a possible 12 points. They have now set up a quarterfinal date with Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday. Morocco, which finished second in the group, will take on Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
Behind Kenya’s impressive run has been a lucrative motivational package from the president. Each player and member of the technical bench has earned Ksh 1 million per match, translating to Ksh 5 million each so far—rewarded for three wins, one draw, and qualification for the quarterfinals. For many, it is a life-changing sum.
Speaking to NTV, Mohammed hailed the president’s direct involvement with the team.
“The motivation, the inspiration, you can see it in his eyes. By now, he knows every single player by name,” the FKF boss said.
He added that beyond the financial incentives, Ruto has also provided crucial emotional support.
“It is clear from the very moment we walk into that room. He tells them, ‘You have played your part, now I will play mine,’ and he always makes sure to keep that promise.”
Mohammed dismissed skeptics who doubted whether the head of state would fulfill his pledge.
“Nobody can dispute this because I have personally witnessed us fulfilling that pledge,” he stated.
The FKF president also praised the players for their resilience and spirit throughout the tournament.
“At the start of CHAN, nobody believed Harambee Stars would get past the group stage. After all, we were in the so-called group of death, yet our boys have risen and triumphed.”
