The FKF Premier League sits at the apex of the Kenyan football pyramid, which generally comes with better salaries as compared to lower leagues.
Apart from the monthly salaries, which vary per club and per player, various teams also have different financial incentives and perks for their players, but the most popular and perhaps lucrative of them all is the winning allowance, which is paid for every match that a team wins.
Mozzart Sport, led by senior writer Kevin Teya, has dug deep to unearth what each of the 18 clubs competing in the top-tier pays as a winning allowance to each player and compiled them in this article.
Gor Mahia - Ksh5,000
The record 21-time league champions are one of the most popular clubs in the country and offer lucrative salaries that have allowed them to sign the best players from different clubs over the years.
Apart from salaries, K’Ogalo pays each player who is in the match-day squad Ksh5,000 for every game won.
According to our research, the club used to pay up to Ksh10,000 in winning allowances a few years ago, but that was slashed by almost half for sustainability purposes when the club started dominating the league.
However, for continental matches, the allowance was retained at Ksh10,000 and could rise to Ksh20,000 depending on the importance of the matches.
Gor Mahia have already won two of their three league matches this season.
AFC Leopards - Ksh6,500
AFC Leopards is Kenya’s second most successful club and one of the two biggest clubs alongside Gor Mahia.
Ingwe is also one of the clubs that attracts top players both nationally and beyond borders due to their fan base and competitive salaries.
AFC Leopards pays Ksh6,500 in winning allowances to each player, which could grow further as it is on a rolling basis that increases by Ksh1,000 for every win.
This means that back-to-back victories earns each player Ksh7,500, and Ksh8,500 for the third win in that order. A draw or a loss restores the winning allowance back to Ksh6,500.
In their three matches so far this season, Leopards are yet to register a win and therefore players have not earned a winning allowance.
Shabana - Ksh5,000
Kisii-based Shabana FC have established themselves as a force to reckon with since their return to the top flight in 2023, ending their 17-year absence from the top flight.
The Glamour Boys earn Ksh5,000 as a winning allowance. However, just like AFC Leopards, Shabana’s winning allowance is on a rolling basis and increases by Ksh2,000 for every successive win.
This means that Shabana players earned Ksh5,000 for their season-opening victory over APS Bomet and Ksh7,000 for their 1-0 away to Bandari.
However, their draw against Tusker FC and subsequent loss to Posta Rangers restored the winning allowance to Ksh5,000.
Nairobi United - Ksh10,000
Reigning Mozzart Bet Cup champions Nairobi United, who are in their maiden season in the FKFPL, are among the clubs paying the highest winning allowances.
For every win, Naibois pays its players Ksh10,000. The club also offers competitive salaries, which made them edge established clubs in the race to sign top players, including Harambee Stars midfielder Manzur Okwaro.
With their three wins this season, two in the league and one in the CAF Confederation Cup, Naibois players have earned Ksh30,000, which have all come in October
KCB FC - Ksh10,000
KCB FC is one of the most financially stable clubs in the league, due to the backing of their parent company, KCB Bank, Kenya’s largest bank in market share and assets.
For every win, each KCB player earns Ksh10,000, making them one of the highest-paying clubs. The team has won two league matches so far this season.
Bandari FC - 10,000
Bandari FC are also the other financially stable club in Kenya due to the financial muscle of their parent company, Kenya Ports Authority, one of Kenya’s most profitable parastatals.
Each of the team’s players in the match day squad earns Ksh10,000 for every win in the league, an amount they have earned once in their four attempts this season.
Kakamega Homeboyz - Ksh8,000
2023 Mozzart Bet Cup champions Kakamega Homeboyz also offer one of the highest winning allowances in the league.
The Kakamega-based side pays Ksh8,000 to each player for every league match won, a move that is largely backed by their sponsorship from one of Kenya’s leading gaming firms, Mozzart Bet Kenya Limited.
Tusker FC - Ksh7,500
12-time league champions, Tusker, are also one of the highest paying clubs in both monthly salaries and winning allowances, which stand at Ksh7,500.
This is made possible by the backing of the club’s parent company, Kenya Breweries Limited, one of Kenya’s most profitable companies.
Murang’a Seal - Ksh6,000
For Murang'a-based outfit Murang’a seal, every win earns each of the players in the match day squad Ksh6,000.
Kenya Police - Ksh5,000
Reining FKF Premier League champions Kenya Police FC are also one of the most financially stable clubs in the country.
The club boasts the highest number of corporate sponsorships, which has made them offer competitive salaries.
For every league win, the club pays its players Ksh5,000. However, it is not yet clear how much the players earn in winning allowances from continental assignments.
APS Bomet-Ksh5,000
Fellow, National Police Service-affiliated club, APS Bomet also offer Ksh5,000 in winning allowances even though they are yet to record a win this season.
Mara Sugar, Mathare United & Sofapaka-Ksh5,000
Other clubs paying Ksh5,000 in winning allowances include Mara Sugar, Mathare United and Sofapaka.
Kariobangi Sharks - Ksh4,000
The 2018 Mozzart Bet Cup champions are among the lowest paying clubs in winning allowances, with each player earning Ksh4,000 for every league win.
Bidco United & Ulinzi Stars- Ksh3,000
The lowest earners in the league in winning allowances are Bidco United and Ulinzi Stars, who pay each of their players Ksh3,000 for every win.
Ironically, the two clubs also boast some of the most financially stable institutions. Bidco United is owned by Bidco Africa Limited, one of Africa’s most profitable Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies, which is headquartered in Thika, Kenya.
Ulinzi Stars, on the other hand, is owned by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) - one of the institutions in Kenya with the highest budgetary allocations.
