Remontada back in style – Barca chases 4-goal deficit vs Atletico Madrid

Hansi Flick’s team must do their best to try to neutralize the embarrassment suffered against the Madrid club

The stage is set at Camp Nou this Tuesday as Barcelona faces a monumental uphill battle against Atletico Madrid in the return leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Following a disastrous first-leg showing at the Metropolitano, Hansi Flick’s men find themselves staring down a 4-0 aggregate deficit, a rare and humbling position for the Catalan giants.

While the hosts require a near-miraculous turnaround to keep their silverware dreams alive, Diego Simeone’s side arrives in Barcelona with one foot already in the final, knowing that only a total collapse could strip them of their commanding advantage.

Despite the heavy blow dealt in the first leg—where Atletico’s intensity and tactical discipline completely smothered the Blaugrana—Barcelona can find a glimmer of hope in their domestic form. As La Liga leaders, they recently bounced back with a dominant 4-1 victory over Villarreal, highlighted by a historic first career hat-trick from the sensational Lamine Yamal.

However, reversing a four-goal margin against a team as defensively resolute as Los Rojiblancos remains a daunting prospect. In the previous encounter, Barcelona’s struggles were compounded by the absence of several stars, and while the return of Marcus Rashford, Raphinha, and Pedri offers a massive tactical boost, the squad remains stretched.

Robert Lewandowski is sidelined with a facial injury, Ferran Torres is expected to lead the attack, and the defense is weakened by Eric Garcia’s suspension and Andreas Christensen’s long-term absence.

Atletico Madrid enters this clash with the luxury of a massive lead and the momentum of a gritty 1-0 win over Real Oviedo, courtesy of a late Julian Alvarez strike. Simeone is expected to deploy his trademark compact defensive block, aim to frustrate the hosts, and kill the tie on the counter-attack.

Though the visitors are missing Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios through injury, their frontline of Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth remains a potent threat to a Barcelona side that must commit bodies forward.

Historically, these two sides rarely play out draws, suggesting a high-stakes, decisive evening is ahead. For Barcelona, it is a quest for the "remontada" of a lifetime; for Atletico, it is a matter of professional game management to secure their ticket to the final.
