Former Real defender wants to play in the World Cup at the age of 40

Although he will celebrate his 40th birthday on March 30 next year, Sergio Ramos has no intention of ending his career. On the contrary, his wish is to be among the players traveling with the Spanish national team to the World Cup next June. With that goal in mind, the trophy-laden center-back will leave Mexico and return to European football in order to put himself back on the radar of head coach Luis de la Fuente. His farewell to Monterrey did not go as hoped, as Toluca won 3–2 and advanced to the final of the national cup. It was the final match for the captain of the blue-and-whites, whose contract expires on December 31.

There is talk that the Spaniard has a strong desire to join Luka Modrić in Milan, which would not be a major surprise given that the Rossoneri are known for signing players in the twilight of their careers—just as they did with Modrić this past summer. There are still no concrete details or any official confirmation of such a move, but even Madrid-based AS mentioned it as a possibility. In addition, it is also reported that Ramos would like to return to Real Madrid. However, it is difficult to believe that Xabi Alonso is seriously considering such an option, and it is also a big question how seriously De la Fuente is taking Ramos’s intention to earn a call-up for the World Cup.

In any case, given his character, there is no doubt that the brilliant defender will try over the next six months to convince the national team coach to call him up. It remains to be seen in which jersey he will attempt to do so. During his time in Mexico, where he arrived in February 2025, Sergio Ramos played 32 matches and scored seven goals. Interestingly, at Monterrey he chose the number 93 on his shirt instead of his usual number 4, in honor of the goal he scored in the third minute of stoppage time in the 2014 Champions League final against Atlético Madrid, which sent the match into extra time—where Real Madrid went on to claim their historic tenth European title (they now have 15). Ramos even had that same number tattooed on his head last winter.
