Everton, while providing its player contract update, named Onyango among seven players in the Under 21s team who were expected to leave the club, upon the expiry of their contracts at the end of this month (June).
“In the Under-21s, Jacob Beaumont-Clark, Kingsford Boakye, Roman Dixon, Bradley Moonan, Francis Okoronkwo, Tyler Onyango and Reece Welch will leave Everton when their contracts expire at the end of this month,” the Toffees wrote, confirming the impeding departure of the 23-year-old.
Onyango, born to a Kenyan father and English mother, had recently been out on loan at League One side Stockport County, where he only featured in 10 matches during the 2025-2026 season.
The limited game time came as a result of a hamstring injury he suffered in a February match against Bradford City, one that ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.
Onyango was then in his second temporary spell with the Hatters, having also been previously loaned out by the Everton U21s during the 2024-2025 season.
Then, Onyango’s playing time was again rocked by injury, with another hamstring issue setting him back for over three months, and limiting his participation to only seven matches.
At the beginning of this season, Onyango, who made his Everton first-team debut as a late substitute in an FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021, looked prime to break through to David Moyes’ side, having been involved in a pre-season trip to the US.
Then, Onyango, who previously turned out for Burton Albion and Forest Green Rovers, played nine minutes of Everton’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, before featuring for 30 minutes of a 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
Everton instead chose to ship him out on loan again, where things did not clearly work out.
Onyango, despite featuring 10 times for the England U21s, is still an eligible candidate to play for Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
Last year, Stars coach Benni McCarthy confirmed that he had reached out to the youngster for a future call-up, and got positive feedback.
Of immediate essence for Onyango however, will be to find a club, with his Premier League dream at Everton coming to an end.
