Portugal and Colombia battle for top spot, DR Congo one step away from a dream

Group K is one of those groups where everything is still up in the air – we'll soon find out who finishes where
First place in Group K will be decided early on Sunday morning at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida, where a spectacular showdown awaits between Colombia and Portugal. The South Americans find themselves in a much better position ahead of this decisive final group stage match, as consecutive victories over Uzbekistan and DR Congo have propelled them to the top of the table.
Nestor Lorenzo's men are well aware that a draw is more than enough to maintain their leadership and book a round-of-16 date with one of the eight best third-placed teams. On the other hand, Portugal has no room for complacency in Miami Gardens, as they are still haunted by their opening-round draw against DR Congo.

Although their response was excellent, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the team to a resounding 5–0 win over Uzbekistan, victory this Saturday remains an absolute must if the Selecao wants to reclaim the top spot. Fortunately, Colombia has already secured qualification, while Portugal is virtually guaranteed a place in the next round, which should relieve the pressure on both sides and deliver an attractive, open game between two continental powerhouses.
Colombia's combative and aggressive style is bound to turn this match into a real midfield battle, but Portugal's pure class might ultimately prove decisive. Colombia's main attacking threat will be Luis Suarez, who is fresh off an incredible 38-goal season with Sporting.
The 28-year-old is expected to start as he hunts for his first-ever World Cup goal, provided he has overcome the minor injury that forced him off before the hour mark in the previous round. He will be joined in attack by the tireless Luis Diaz and 34-year-old national hero and captain James Rodriguez. Additionally, Daniel Munoz has found his shooting boots this summer with back-to-back goals, including the winner against DR Congo, so he will also pose a major threat down the flanks.
Much like his counterpart Lorenzo, Roberto Martinez is unlikely to tweak the lineup that dismantled Uzbekistan, meaning Ruben Dias and Joao Felix should retain their spots in the starting eleven. Ronaldo will naturally occupy the spotlight in Florida as he looks to add to his goal tally following Tuesday’s brace, while Bruno Fernandes will once again pull the strings from the number 10 position after registering his first assist of the tournament last time out.
Meanwhile, at the same time, in a clash between the teams at the bottom of the table, DR Congo and Uzbekistan will battle for a potential third-place finish.
Saturday’s showdown represents a landmark moment for both DR Congo and Uzbekistan, with a place in the last 32 dangling in front of them—a feat neither nation has achieved before. The Leopards are undoubtedly sitting pretty; after holding Portugal to a stalemate and pushing Colombia to the brink in a narrow 1–0 defeat, Sebastien Desabre’s side holds the tactical advantage. They simply need to take care of business on the pitch to keep their dream alive.

For Uzbekistan, however, the math is cruel. They are essentially staring at the exit door. To pull off the impossible, the White Wolves don’t just need a win—they need a total turnaround to overhaul a disastrous goal difference. The tournament debutants have looked shell-shocked so far, leaking eight goals across two heavy defeats.
This first-ever meeting between the two nations is unlikely to be the balanced affair their FIFA rankings suggest. While the Leopards have built a reputation on defensive grit and organization, Uzbekistan has been anything but secure.
Fabio Cannavaro, the man tasked with steadying the ship, will be desperate to see a more professional display from his backline, but it is hard to look past DR Congo as the clear favorites. The Leopards have the momentum, the defense, and the discipline, and they look poised to add a third consecutive defeat to Uzbekistan’s difficult campaign.
