Orlando Gill sold his clothes to pay for his son's treatment, battled through hardship and obscurity, and, finally, delivered one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history

Just two years ago, Orlando Gill was selling his own clothes to save his seriously ill son. Today, he is the man who brought four-time world champions Germany to their knees.

Paraguay produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by eliminating Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32. At the heart of the upset stood a goalkeeper most football fans had barely heard of before this tournament.

Gill produced the performance of his life, making six saves during the match before stopping two penalties in the shootout to send Paraguay into the Round of 16 for the first time since 2010. In doing so, they also became the first nation ever to eliminate Germany on penalties at a World Cup.

Yet remarkable as his display was, it is only one chapter in an extraordinary life story.

Born in San Lorenzo, Paraguay, in 2000, the towering 199-centimetre goalkeeper did not always play between the posts. As a youngster, he was a striker until one of his youth coaches handed him an ultimatum: "Either become a goalkeeper or sit on the bench."

His greatest battle, however, came away from football.

In 2022, Gill's newborn son, Lautaro Daniel, became seriously ill. Facing severe financial hardship, the young goalkeeper sold virtually everything he owned to pay for his child's treatment - his clothes, shoes and personal belongings. He even parted with his treasured Paraguay Under-20 Copa America jersey, the most precious football memento he had.

Orlando's sacrifice saved his son's life. The emotional social media posts he shared during that difficult period went largely unnoticed at the time, only resurfacing years later as his World Cup heroics captured global attention.

His football rise has been just as improbable. Only two years ago, Gill had played just two senior matches for Paraguayan side San Lorenzo before joining Argentine club of the same name. Initially expected to feature for the reserves, he was unexpectedly promoted after moves for Keylor Navas and Andries Noppert fell through. He seized the opportunity and quickly established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper, despite reportedly still waiting for three months of unpaid wages because of the club's financial problems.

Gill made his Paraguay debut only in September 2025 and arrived at the World Cup with just six international caps. After a difficult opening defeat to the United States, he responded with consecutive clean sheets against Turkey and Australia to help Paraguay squeeze into the knockout rounds.

Then came Germany.

Gill frustrated the four-time champions throughout 120 exhausting minutes before denying Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade in the shootout, before Jonathan Tah blasted the decisive penalty over the crossbar.

"I am incredibly emotional," Gill said afterwards.

"We analysed every penalty taker, and thank God I managed to save two of them. I dedicate this victory to all Paraguayans."
