Having avoided relegation last season, the coach believes Monday's result is a sign of better things to come this year

Posta Rangers head coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo was full of praise for his substitutes for playing a leading role in a 2-1 comeback victory over Mathare United at Kasarani Annex on Monday, 22 September.

Trailing through an Elly Asieche penalty in the first half, Omollo dug deep to his bench to spark a late revival from the Mailmen, a result the former Kenyan international labelled a good platform to build on in the new season.

Omollo’s first substitution came at halftime when he brought on ex-Tusker man Brian Marita to inject some pace upfront, before making further changes at the hour-mark, introducing the pair of Maxwell Odada and Lewis Shivachi.

The substitutions resulted in Posta enjoying a larger share of possession in the second-half, and were unfortunate not to score in that period, despite creating a myriad of opportunities that were either poorly finished, or blocked out by Kevin Ouru and defender Ian Omondi.

Still seeking a goal with 20 minutes to go, Omollo once again returned to his bench, introducing Teddy Trevor Omondi, and Vincent ‘Crucial’ Wasambo.

What followed later was what everyone but Omollo saw, as the substitutes worked together to turn around the score, all in a space of 13 minutes.

The first goal - a rebound by Faustine Ojiambo - came after MaxwellOdada had pinged his header from Jackson Dwang’s freekick onto the post, before Wasambo, Shivachi and Trevor combined on a swift move in the 85th minute to complete the comeback.

Speaking of the impact of his second-half substitutions, Omollo said: “In football, I love it when I make subs, the player coming in adds new energy to the team.

And that is what Teddy, Wasambo and Lewis did. Their energy helped us win today’s game, because such games are won from the bench.”

More importantly for Omollo, however, was the fighting spirit the entire squad showed, having trailed through what he termed an unlucky goalin the 43rd minute.

“The goal we conceded came in the last minutes of the half and I would say it was unlucky,” the former Shabana head coach said.

“But the fighting spirit by my boys in the second half showed me that last season played a role in improving their belief. I will keep on instilling that message even after today.”

In the 2024-2025 season, Posta Rangers finished 16th, and only secured their place in the top-flight via the now scrapped promotion-relegation playoffs, where they beat National Super League (NSL) side Naivas 3-0 on aggregate.

“We also showed that if we keep on improving our attack, we will score in every game,” Omollo said. “This was such a good platform to build on.”

Up next for him will be a trip to Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos to face Tusker on Saturday, 27 September.
