“I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise for the recent misunderstanding and the unfortunate turn of events surrounding the photo post made from my official page,” read a post on Ochieng’s Facebook account.

The winger was in the spotlight after posting a photo from Kangwana Media in his post-match message, but went ahead to unfortunately cover the watermark.

The Harambee Stars winger covered Kangwana’s watermark with a location tag of Awendo Green Stadium, where Nairobi United played their maiden FKF Premier League match, edging Mara Sugar FC 1-0.

In the post, which has since been deleted, fans as well as Charles Kangwana, the founder of Kangwana Media, questioned the Harambee Stars winger on the infringement of intellectual property rights.

Unfortunately, the winger went ahead to try and justify his actions, instead laying blame on the photographer for taking a photo of him without his consent, noting that they had the team’s photographer on duty.

The response led to an online spat on the former AFC Leopards wingers’ page, attracting more attention from football stakeholders.

The online debate, which saw the involvement of members of the fourth estate, continued for the better part of Thursday, 2 October, with Ochieng being on the receiving end.

The 25-year-old, in a restricted post on his personal Facebook account and not the page where the previous post was uploaded, has since taken responsibility, noting that it was not him who personally posted or engaged in the spat.

“It is important for me to clarify that the said page is managed and run by an assistant on my behalf.

While I take full responsibility for any content that appears there, I was unaware that a photo had been posted without the rightful acknowledgement of the photographer—something that goes against both my principles and values,” reads part of the apology.

The former Kariobangi Sharks man, in his apology to the media outlet, went ahead to acknowledge the important role the media has played in his growth.

“To Kangwana Media, and especially to you, Charles, I deeply regret any disrespect or misrepresentation that may have occurred. You have been instrumental in capturing and sharing some of the most powerful and career-defining moments of my journey in football.

From my early days to where I stand today, the media has not only documented but also amplified my story, and for that, I remain eternally grateful,” the apology continued.

Ovella, who has previously featured for South African sides Richards Bay and Marumo Gallants, also highlighted how the game has benefited from the media.

“I hold the media, especially homegrown brands like yours, in the highest regard. Your dedication to the sport and the players behind it has shaped narratives, built brands, and grown the game we all love.

I have nothing but utmost respect for your craft and professionalism. Let this be a reminder that collaboration and mutual respect are the pillars that keep this ecosystem thriving.”

Ochieng, who was part of the 2017 Harambee Stars squad that won the CECAFA Senior Men’s Challenge Cup concluded by reemphasising his regrets on the controversy.

“Once again, I offer my deepest apologies and hope to continue walking this journey with you—stronger, united, and respectful of each other's contributions.”

The media house, through the same platform, confirmed and accepted the apology, noting the sincerity of the Harambee Stars man.

“On behalf of myself, Charles Kangwana, and the entire Kangwana Media team, I confirm receipt of the official statement of apology from Ovella Ochieng.

We acknowledge and appreciate the sincerity with which he has addressed the matter,” reads part of the statement.

“Your recognition of the importance of proper credit and the value of collaboration in our industry is both noted and respected.

We accept your apology and look forward to continued mutual support and professional engagement in the spirit of growth, respect and shared success,” the statement concludes.
