The dominant display came just days after the club made sweeping changes to its technical bench, dismissing most members of the staff while retaining head coach Vincent Nyaberi.

The bold decision appeared to spark an immediate response as the Kirinyaga-based side delivered a ruthless attacking performance in the Mlima derby.

Fortune started the match with intensity and purpose, overwhelming a disorganised Kabati side whose defensive frailties were exposed repeatedly.

The visitors struggled to keep their shape, with crosses repeatedly causing chaos inside the penalty area as goalkeeper Innocent Lihasi was left helpless against the relentless waves of attacks.

Kabati’s afternoon went from bad to worse in the 30th minute when Amos Mbago was forced off with an injury, further destabilising a backline that already looked stretched.

Stanley Mbaru, Alex Nyando, Kevin Salana and John Kimani were constantly pinned deep while midfielders Jeff Ayodi and Ali Omari struggled to provide the necessary cover.

The floodgates opened soon after, with Collins Maina producing a devastating performance that yielded four goals.

New signing Clement Imabyi also marked his arrival in style, getting on the scoresheet again as Fortune’s forward line carved open the visitors with ease.

Lucky Musyoka added a brace to the tally, Nick Kirui opened his account for the club, and Jacob Wangui rounded off the rout with his sixth goal of the season as the Rice Farmers turned the derby into a goal fest.

Kabati’s defenders, including Ken Bunchunju, endured a torrid afternoon as they failed to cope with the relentless crosses and quick transitions from the hosts, who seemed capable of scoring with nearly every attack they launched.

The 9-0 scoreline ranks among the biggest victories recorded in the division in recent years. The last comparable result came when Gusii FC defeated Vihiga United 9-1 in 2023.

Historically, the NSL has witnessed several heavy scorelines, including Nairobi Stima’s 9-0 demolition of Kibera Black Stars in 2019 and KCB’s 8-0 victory over Vihiga United during their promotion push.

The commanding win lifts Fortune Sacco to sixth place in the 20-team standings with 36 points, leaving them just five points shy of the promotion brackets as the race for top-flight football intensifies.

Equity Bank FC 1-3 Mombasa United

Meanwhile, league leaders Mombasa United continued their impressive run with a 3-1 victory over Equity Bank at Mashuuru Sports Complex.

Gilbert Selebwa’s side took control early in the match, striking twice in the first half through Hamisi Mwinyi and Jack Watee to silence the home crowd.

Their dominance continued after the break, and Mayson Lucky effectively sealed the points in the 70th minute with a well-taken third goal.

Equity Bank managed to pull one back in the 79th minute through Josiah Timpati, but the hosts never truly threatened a comeback as Mombasa United calmly managed the closing stages.

The victory extended Mombasa United’s unbeaten streak to six matches and opened a six-point lead at the summit ahead of Migori Youth’s fixture on Sunday.

MOFA 1-0 Naivas FC

Elsewhere, Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Naivas at Raila Odinga Stadium on their return to the venue.

Vincent Nyaberi scored the decisive goal that kept MOFA third in the standings and firmly in the promotion race.

Darajani Gogo 1-0 Kibera Black Stars

At Vapour Grounds, Jephter Bundi struck the lone goal of the match as Kibera Black Stars edged rivals Darajani Gogo 1-0 in a fiercely contested Kibera derby.

Nairobi United 1-0 Mwatate United

At Gems Cambridge, James Kibande's goal was enough for Nairobi City Stars to see off Mwatate United 1-0.
