Mulembe have managed a single win this term

Mulembe United head coach Samuel Twago has admitted a tough start to the 2023-2024 National Super League (NSL) season from his charges but has been quick to challenge his players to rise to the occasion and get to winning ways.

Mulembe, previously operating as Vihiga United, have had a rough patch this term contrary to expectations after the takeover and could find themselves bottom of the log at the conclusion of round seven matches.

The former Football Kenya Federation Premier League side have picked up one win this campaign, thrashing fellow strugglers MCF 2-1, before setting an unwanted record as the only team to have tasted five defeats this term, falling to Kajiado, Mathare United, Mombasa Elite, Assad and Nairobi United.

Speaking after the Nairobi duel, the former Soy United second in command was by far pleased by Mulembe's display in the match that individual mistakes awarded the clash to the league newbies.

Twago babbled his rookies to take the bull by its horn and start delivering suggesting that they have been clumsy in most of the matches.

We have started the season on a low, it seems the matches are not going our way though we have also let ourselves down in most instances. Versus Nairobi we conceded goals that could have been avoided. I will talk to the boys in the training sessions and try to amend some of the slight mistakes they are making that are now proving costly,” offered Twago.

Twago who took over the club mid-last season following the resignation of Mike Muiruri hinted that the club was paying for the missed preseason that resulted from late clearance with the world football governing body FIFA thus players got little time to gel and understand the technical bench philosophy.

We are paying for failed preseason, we never had one, the players were signed when the season was underway and obviously it was going to take time before we could figure out the perfect starting team for us, and also the players are taking long before mastering our tactics which is slowing down our season,” he added.

The long-serving member of the Mulembe technical bench however remained convinced that the club would soon find their firing boots and reignite their season as he believes it is too early to throw in the towel.

The season is still fresh and we are putting in shifts in training sessions to minimize the number of goals we are conceding and try to score more which will win games for us. We can’t rule ourselves out yet,” he concluded.
