A clinical brace from Syphas Otieno, coupled with a well-taken strike by Churchill Otieno, proved decisive as the Migori-based outfit secured a crucial victory to move joint top of the standings alongside Mombasa United on 52 points.
With maximum points at stake in the tightly contested promotion race, Migori entered the encounter fully aware that anything less than victory would hand their rivals a significant advantage.
On the other hand, FC Talanta, backed by the Communications Authority of Kenya, were equally motivated, knowing a win would significantly enhance their faint push for a promotion slot.
The hosts wasted no time in stamping their authority on the match, launching into proceedings with high intensity and attacking purpose.
Their early pressure paid off almost immediately, as Syphas Otieno broke the deadlock just two minutes into the game.
The in-form forward latched onto a well-weighted delivery from Samuel Maiko, racing through the defence before calmly slotting home.
However, Talanta responded swiftly. In the eighth minute, Ian Nyongesa capitalised on a defensive lapse to restore parity, reacting quickest to a loose ball and finishing with composure to silence the home crowd.
Buoyed by the equaliser, the visitors grew in confidence and nearly took the lead moments later, with Alex Kipruto surging down the left flank before firing narrowly wide.
Migori, however, remained dangerous going forward. Churchill Otieno came close midway through the half, but his effort drifted off target after connecting with a precise pass from Syphas Otieno.
The match continued at a lively tempo, with both sides creating chances.
Talanta threatened again through Nyongesa at the hour mark, but his low drive failed to trouble goalkeeper Victor Kamungo.
The turning point arrived ten minutes from time when Migori were awarded a penalty after Samuel Maiko was brought down in the box. Syphas Otieno stepped up and made no mistake, sending goalkeeper Wycliford Otieno the wrong way to restore the hosts’ lead.
Barely moments after retaking the lead, Migori extended their advantage in stunning fashion.
Churchill Otieno embarked on a brilliant solo run down the right flank before unleashing a low drive that slipped past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1, sparking jubilant celebrations among the home supporters.
Migori nearly added a fourth before the break, with Samuel Maiko’s well-controlled volley from a Kenjosteve Owenga delivery sailing just wide.
After the restart, the hosts continued to assert dominance.
Vincent Wanga came close with a powerful header from Churchill Otieno’s cross, while Talanta’s Abiola Peter missed a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit, his volley drifting inches off target.
Further chances fell to Yusuf Ochieng and Omondi Stewart for either side, but neither could find the back of the net as the contest stretched into its final stages.
Talanta threw numbers forward in the closing minutes in a desperate attempt to mount a comeback, but Migori’s defence held firm under pressure to seal all three points.
The victory extends Migori Youth’s winning streak to four matches and lifts them to joint top of the table, underlining their growing credentials as serious promotion contenders.
For FC Talanta, the defeat represents a missed opportunity, leaving them five points adrift of the automatic promotion places as the race intensifies.
