For a player who had drifted close to oblivion, Mwangi's remarkable resurgence and impressive numbers leave him head and shoulders above the rest in the race for the league's Most Valuable Player award
Following the conclusion of the 2025-2026 Football Kenya Federation Premier League(FKFPL) last weekend, attention has naturally shifted to the National Super League (NSL) and other lower tier competitions.
The second tier is witnessing cut-throat competition at both ends of the table, with teams battling for automatic promotion to the top flight while others fight desperately to avoid relegation.

With two rounds left, teams are battling hard either to secure promotion, escape relegation or achieve a respectable finish.
The NSL is a tough competition where survival is exclusively reserved for the fittest.
However, behind the sky-high competition and other topics that have been dominating the headlines, are players who have been quietly lighting up the competition and could make moves at the end of the season.
Some top flight clubs are understood to be circling around some of the league's best performers in a bid to secure their signatures.
Mozzart Sport has kept a close watch on matches across the country, from when the season began, and here are some of the unsung heroes spotted so far.
Goalkeepers:
Michael Onyango (Equity Bank)
Popularly known as "Onyi," Onyango has been one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the division.
The physically imposing shot-stopper has played a key role in keeping Equity Bank firmly in the promotion conversation.
Across 26 appearances, he has registered 16 clean sheets while conceding just 14 goals.
Interestingly, his previous experience as a striker and full-back has given him an advantage when reading the game and understanding attacking movements.
Peter Juma (FC Talanta)
The club's strong performance in the first-leg can, arguably, be attributed to Juma's consistency.
The goalkeeper collected 14 clean sheets and established himself as one of the safest pairs of hands in the league.
His absence during parts of the second leg coincided with a dip in results.
Ultimately, Talanta failed in their bid to secure return ticket to the top tier.
Malvin Nderitu (Fortune Sacco)
The former Bidco United goalkeeper has rediscovered his best form this season.
Nderitu has produced numerous match-saving interventions and played a major role in Fortune Sacco's impressive campaign.
While his numbers slowed slightly towards the end of the season, his overall contribution remains significant.
Kevin Tila (Mombasa United)
Tila's season has been a story of patience and growth.
The 20-year-old endured a difficult start as he battled for the number one jersey with Richard Ebenyo.
However, he cemented his place during the second leg, registering 11 clean sheets in just 15 matches.
Comfortable in one-on-one situations, confident with the ball at his feet and strong in penalty situations, Tila looks destined for bigger challenges.

Defenders:
Bonface Mukhekhe (MOFA)
Few players have matched Mukhekhe's consistency this season.
The former AFC Leopards winger has featured in every league match from right-back and has been equally effective in attack and defense.
He has contributed to 12 clean sheets while adding two goals and five assists.
His energy and tactical discipline have been vital for coach Fabian Hosea's side.
Woodvine Okoth (Migori Youth)
Leadership has been one of Migori Youth's greatest strengths this season, and Okoth has been at the heart of it.
The captain has brought calm and organization to the back line while helping the team embark on a remarkable run of clean sheets.
His understanding with goalkeeper Victor Khamungo has played a significant role in Migori's defensive success.
Owen Amwayi (3K FC)
The left-back has enjoyed an outstanding campaign.
Amwayi has started 30 of the club's 32 matches.
He possesses defensive solidity and attacking threat.
His return of two goals and 10 assists highlights his importance to 3K FC's system.
Daniel Wabwire (3K FC)
When Wabwire missed matches through injury, 3K FC felt his absence.
The captain returned during the second leg and immediately restored stability to the side.
Beyond his defensive work, he has contributed four goals and helped the club maintain the best defensive record in the division with 17 clean sheets.
Donald Omwanda (Kibera Black Stars)
Experience remains priceless in football, and Omwanda continues to prove it.
The Kibera Black Stars captain has marshaled the club's defense for eight seasons and remains one of the league's most influential leaders.
Across 35 matches, he has helped his side keep 14 clean sheets while scoring six goals, several of them being match winners.
Juma Mwajao (Mombasa United)
In his debut NSL season, Mwajao has looked like a veteran.
The center-back has formed an excellent partnership with Peter Mbuya during the second half of the campaign.
Strong in aerial duels, aggressive in tackles, and capable of launching attacks with accurate distribution, he has been a key pillar in Mombasa United's defense.
Other defenders who deserve recognition include: Hesborne Omwamba (Gucha Stars), Felix Ochieng (Mombasa United), Winston Song (Equity Bank), Victor Matete (Fortune Sacco), and Ian Mbugua (Kabati Youth).

Midfielders
Joseph Bate (MOFA)
The defensive midfield position belongs to Bate.
Despite his young age, the Kenyan youth international plays with remarkable maturity.
His reading of the game, positioning, and ability to break up attacks make him one of the most complete holding midfielders in the division.
His work rate and intelligence often draw comparisons to Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.
Samuel Ochieng (Equity Bank)
Previously deployed as a right-back, Ochieng has flourished in a deeper midfield role under coach John Kamara.
He acts as the bridge between defense and attack while also possessing a dangerous long-range shot that regularly causes problems for opponents.
Harmvine Okoth and Samuel Maiko (Migori Youth)
Some partnerships simply work.
Migori Youth's midfield duo of Okoth and Maiko has dominated battles across the league.
Okoth, still only 18, displays composure beyond his years and can unlock defenses with precise passing.
Maiko, meanwhile, has added creativity and vision, contributing eight assists from central midfield.
Yusuf Khalif (MCF)
It is rare to find a player from a relegation-threatened side on such a list, but Khalif has earned his place.
The 17-year-old has brought excitement every time he steps onto the pitch.
Quick, fearless, and direct, he possesses the ability to glide past opponents and create danger in tight spaces.
Other midfielders worthy of mention include: Wattsak Mustami (Soy United), Robert Obaga (Naivas), Jack Watee (Mombasa United), Robert Mutua (Equity Bank), and Samuel Indonyi (Luanda Villa).

Forwards:
Churchill Otieno (Migori Youth)
Otieno's numbers only tell part of the story.
The former Agoro Sare captain has scored eight goals and provided seven assists while operating behind the striker.
More importantly, he has been the creative engine that powers Migori Youth's attack.
Alfred Ratolo (Soy United)
Traditional center forwards are becoming increasingly rare in modern football.
Ratolo is one of them.
The 20-year-old has bullied defenders throughout the season, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists in his debut NSL campaign.
Mark Kithome (3K FC)
Kithome has enjoyed a breakthrough season.
His return of 14 goals and seven assists highlights a player capable of influencing games in multiple ways.
His pace, deliveries, and relentless work ethic make him one of the division's most dangerous attackers.
Wayne Mureithi (Equity Bank)
Although he joined midway through the season, Mureithi has quickly established himself as one of the league's most exciting wingers.
The 20-year-old has been directly involved in numerous goals, providing close to eight assists in just 15 second-leg appearances.
His performances suggest a bright future lies ahead.
George Ogutu (MOFA)
Injuries may have disrupted his season, but Ogutu still managed to leave a mark.
The 19-year-old, who recently committed his future to MOFA until 2029, has scored seven goals and created several others.
On his day, he remains one of the most exciting young attackers in the league.
Geofrey Odira (Migori Youth)
Since arriving from Kariobangi Sharks, Odira has settled seamlessly into life at Migori Youth.
He has featured in 30 matches, scoring five goals and supplying an impressive 15 assists, making him one of the league's most productive creators.
Evans Malo (FC Talanta)
The former Sharks forward has enjoyed an impressive season for Talanta.
His tally of 14 goals has kept him among the division's most dangerous strikers, and he continues to deliver when his side needs him most.
Nickson Kipngeno (Mwatate United)
Few players have adapted to the NSL as quickly as Kipngeno.
Making the jump from county football, the youngster has scored 11 goals and registered five assists despite playing for a side battling near the bottom of the table.
Collins Maina Mwangi (Fortune Sacco)
My Player of the Season.
After an earlier spell in the NSL with SS Assad, Maina returned to the lower divisions before fighting his way back.
This time, he came back with purpose.
The striker has scored 24 goals and stands within touching distance of the league's all-time single-season scoring record.
His story is one of resilience, determination, and unfinished business.
Other outstanding attackers this season include: Syphus Owuor (Migori Youth), Fidel Madiela (Mombasa United), Jephter Bundi (Kibera Black Stars) and Victor Baraka (Luanda Villa).
