The Slum Boys managed to retain their FKF Premier League status on Sunday, 31 May, following a 1-0 win over Bandari FC at the Kericho Green Stadium.
The win took Mathare’s points tally to 41, three more than Kariobangi Sharks, who suffered their maiden relegation from the top-flight.
Speaking to the club’s media after the match, the experienced administrator vowed not to be found in the relegation matrix again.
“One thing I want to promise our fans and the naysayers who talked ill of us is that we will never find ourselves in this situation again. As long as I am the CEO, we will never be in this situation where we are looking at the livescore as we watch our match. In the end, God did it,” said Obure.
“This is emotional. We did everything. It was our last match, and we knew it was a final. Every player gave their best.
Things were happening in the other matches, and so we needed to win our match. We knew the stakes were high and decided to fight until the last minute,” he added.
Obure went ahead to attribute the win to the powers above following intense prayers and community service in Kericho.
“We were in Kericho for four days, and we kept talking to the boys and encouraging them. The prayers and the spiritual nourishment did wonders,” he stated.
Further, Obure expressed his gratitude to the Kericho fans who cheered the team to victory over Bandari.
“The people of Kericho, where one of our players, Kiprotich (Hillary), comes from, supported us to the last minute, and that is why we decided to make the entrance free,” he concluded.
