An early strike from Enock Machaka and an unfortunate own goal by Eugene Ochieng sealed the victory for Nicholas Muyoti’s charges, handing the Nairobi-based side their second win of the season while condemning Homeboyz to their first loss of the campaign.
The visitors started brightly, showing intent in the opening exchanges through Ovella Ochieng, whose attempted volley over goalkeeper Edwin Mukolwe sailed narrowly wide.
Homeboyz responded in the 10th minute when Hillary Otieno latched onto a clever pass from Rodgers Ouma, but his low drive rolled harmlessly wide.
In the 13th minute, Glen Masava came close for the hosts after combining well with Otieno, only to see his shot safely gathered by United’s goalkeeper Bernard Jairo. Homeboyz continued to probe, with Gedeon Bendeka heading inches off target from John Omondi’s delivery.
United nearly took the lead in the 20th minute when Frank Ouya missed a teasing cross from Ovella, before Homeboyz again threatened through Otieno, who failed to convert Josphat Lopaga’s cut-back.
The breakthrough finally came in the 27th minute. A swift counter-attack launched from United’s backline saw Jairo release Ovella Ochieng on the flank, whose pinpoint cross was met by Machaka for the opener.
At the hour mark, Ovella almost turned scorer when he outpaced his marker after a fine pass from Brian Mzee, only for Mukolwe to pull off a crucial block.
Three minutes later, Nairobi United doubled their advantage when Eugene Ochieng turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous delivery from Machaka following another incisive move led by Ovella.
Homeboyz pressed to find a way back and nearly capitalised on a goalkeeping blunder when Jairo’s poor clearance ricocheted dangerously but rolled wide as United held on to their 2–0 lead heading into the break.
Upon resumption, Homeboyz came out stronger, with Masava testing Jairo early in the second half after good interplay with Otieno.
The hosts continued to pile pressure, forcing a series of saves from the United custodian. In the 55th minute, Otieno’s fierce drive was tipped over for a corner, and from the ensuing delivery, Boniface Onyango headed narrowly wide.
United weathered the storm and nearly added a third through substitutes Shami Kibwana and Isaac Omweri, whose combination play ended with Kibwana firing straight at Mukolwe.
Homeboyz continued to search for a breakthrough, with substitute Odaro and Majaka both going close, the latter’s header cleared off the line by John Otieno in the dying minutes as Nairobi United stood firm to secure all three points.
The victory marked a significant boost for Muyoti’s men, who now look to build on their momentum as they continue their debut top-flight campaign.
