The committee faces a pressing challenge: ensuring a successful AFCON 2027 despite Kenya’s current infrastructure lag

Veteran football administrator Nicholas Musonye, who previously served as CHAN Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman, has been retained to lead the AFCON 2027 preparations as Chairman of the Nations Steering Committee.

This was confirmed through a gazette notice issued by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.

Last week, CS Mvurya signaled changes in the AFCON LOC, citing the need to have the right personnel in place.

According to him, some members of the CHAN LOC had delayed actions, prompting a restructuring.

“You know, in some of these leadership responsibilities, there are people who find opportunities to drag out actions and decisions. We want those who serve in the LOC to be people who will work for Kenya and demonstrate the spirit, diversity, unity and passion of Kenya.”

Despite earlier rumours that Musonye might exit, he has retained his chairmanship, with FKF President Hussein Mohammed, once again, deputising him.

The most notable change is the removal of CEO Myke Rabar, a renowned businessman and event organiser.

He has been replaced by the relatively unknown Anthony Lung’aho Inzihuli, who will now head the Secretariat.

All NEC members have been included in the Steering Committee, alongside respected football administrators and sports leaders such as former FKF CEO Lordvick Aduda; Peninah Wahome (CEO, Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya); Dr. Doreen Odhiambo (CEO, Kenya Academy of Sports); Abdi Osman (Nairobi United FC), and Timothy Kilimo (Director-General, Sports Kenya).

The committee faces a pressing challenge: ensuring a successful AFCON 2027 despite Kenya’s current infrastructure lag, as highlighted in a recent CAF report.

At present, no stadium in Kenya meets AFCON standards, placing urgency on preparations ahead of the tournament.
