The loss ended the side’s five-match unbeaten streak, leaving the tactician frustrated
Kariobangi Sharks coach William Muluya expressed disappointment after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tusker FC in an FKF Premier League clash at the Police Sacco Grounds on Monday afternoon, admitting his team “shot themselves in the foot.”
The Brewers notched their second win under new coach Julien Mette, with Francis Oduor and Ian Simiyu scoring, while Humphrey Aroko netted a consolation for Sharks.
The loss ended the Sharks’ five-match unbeaten streak, and Muluya was frustrated with how his team conceded the goals. He felt the first goal could have been prevented with better marking.
“Both goals could have been avoided. Even before the first goal, we made a mistake that they didn’t capitalize on. For the first goal, Keegan (Ndemi) should have marked the scorer, but he didn’t, and we were punished,” Muluya said.
The second goal highlighted errors from goalkeepers that have plagued the FKF Premier League this season. Sharks’ keeper Sebastian Wekesa failed to claim what appeared to be an easy cross, allowing Simiyu to score from close range.
“The second goal was too easy. It’s simple to blame the coach or say we lost because we didn’t play well, but today I want the players to explain this to me. The keeper asked the defender to leave the ball for him, but it ended up at Ian (Simiyu)’s feet. I expect a full explanation from the team on what exactly happened,” he added.
Muluya also noted that Sharks were not alert enough, stressing that Tusker’s experience was no excuse for the mistakes.
To make matters worse, star forward Ally Salum suffered an ankle injury during the game. The coach admitted it is a major setback for a club that has struggled for goals this season.
“He picked up an injury. He had played in all of our five unbeaten games. Today, he hurt his ankle, and we don’t yet know how long he will be out. Majak (David) is still trying to find his scoring form, so we need to go back to the drawing board and find solutions,” Muluya said.
Sharks will look to bounce back when they travel to face Shabana at Gusii Stadium in their next league assignment.
