The Uruguayan has struggled to settle since leaving Liverpool, and after a spell in Saudi Arabia, the United States could be his next destination

Darwin Nunez's spell in Saudi Arabia could be coming to an end after only one season. According to The Athletic, the Al-Hilal striker has emerged as a transfer target for Atlanta United, with initial discussions between the two clubs already underway.

While negotiations are still in the early stages and no agreement has been reached, Atlanta are said to be seriously considering a move for the Uruguayan international. Back in England, where Nunez previously represented Liverpool, reports have described the potential switch to Major League Soccer as an unexpected twist.

Atlanta United are preparing for the departure of club-record signing Emmanuel Latte Lath, creating room for a new Designated Player. The striker was even omitted from Wednesday's matchday squad as a precaution while his future is resolved, paving the way for the club to pursue a high-profile replacement.

Nunez only joined Al-Hilal last summer, but his role diminished following the arrival of Karim Benzema, leaving the 27-year-old on the fringes of the squad. As a result, an exit now appears increasingly likely.

Despite limited opportunities, Nunez still contributed six goals and four assists in 16 competitive appearances last season. He also returned to action for Uruguay at last summer's World Cup, making his first official appearance since February, although the tournament ended in disappointment for both him and his country.

Whether Atlanta United can convince Al-Hilal to sanction the transfer remains to be seen. The MLS side are financially capable of pursuing a deal of this magnitude, but negotiations are far from complete.

The exact fee Al-Hilal would demand has not been disclosed. Transfermarkt currently values Nunez at €20 million, while his contract with the Saudi club runs until the summer of 2028.
