While Rayan Ogam’s solitary strike sealed the 1-0 triumph and edged Kenya closer to a historic CHAN quarter-finals berth, it was Omondi’s commanding presence between the posts that stole the spotlight for the legislator.
The Gor Mahia custodian, who recently joined from Bandari FC, produced a string of top-draw saves to keep the Atlas Lions at bay, earning him the coveted Man of the Match accolade.
With two clean sheets already in the tournament, Omondi is now emerging as a strong contender for the Golden Glove award.
The first-term MP serving in the 13th parliament expressed his admiration for the goalkeeper’s composure and shot-stopping mastery.
"I will reward the Harambee Stars goalkeeper by paying for his house rent for three months,” Salasya declared.
“If his rent is Ksh 20,000 a month, that’s Ksh 60,000; if it’s Ksh 30,000, that’s Ksh 90,000; if Ksh 40,000, that’s Ksh 120,000; and if Ksh 50,000, then Ksh 150,000.
He is my Man of the Match. Very composed and knows his work. Let us congratulate the Harambee Stars goalkeeper.”
Salasya’s gesture comes amid a wave of goodwill and pledges from national leaders and celebrities alike, supporting the national team’s exploits.
President William Ruto, who visited the team at their residential camp on Monday, promised Ksh 2.5 million if Kenya beats Zambia to secure a quarter-final spot, and a two-bedroom affordable housing unit at a location of their choice if they progress to the semi-finals.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged Ksh400 million should Harambee Stars lift the title, while musician Kevin Bahati promised Ksh1 million to the team over the weekend.
Before the tournament kicked off, President Ruto had outlined an incentive package that includes Ksh1 million for every win, Ksh500,000 for a draw, Ksh60 million for reaching the quarter-finals, Ksh70 million for a semi-final berth, and Ksh600 million for winning the championship.
So far, Harambee Stars players have already pocketed Ksh2.5 million from their victories over DR Congo and Morocco, and a draw against Angola.
