Odhiambo is part of the Kenyan squad competing in the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) that is being hosted in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

With Kenya having a week to prepare for their next clash against Zambia, head coach Benni McCarthy handed the team a two-day off up to Wednesday, 13 August.

For Odhiambo, he chose to spend it by going back to his roots- the Baba Dogo grounds. It is in that infamous dusty pitch that Austin honed his skills as a young boy.

In a video that is going viral, Odhiambo is seen visiting the grounds where a group of kids were training, as is their norm during school holidays and weekends.

The kids were visibly elated to see their role model, with most of them pausing their training for a moment to run and shake the Gor Mahia stalwart's hands and have a chat.

For the kids training at the facility, Odhiambo is not a stranger; he is an elder brother and a coach who often spends time with them when his schedule allows.

Odhiambo's elder brother and Kenya international Tyson Otieno is one of the coaches at the grounds, and Odhiambo occasionally joins him to share some tips and offer encouragement to the kids.

The controversial grounds, which have hit the headlines recently due to ownership wrangles, largely serve Baba Dogo, Lucky Summer, Ngomongo and Korogocho areas, all of which are close to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The short distance has allowed several of these kids to always walk into the stadium for Harambee Stars matches to support their mentor cum player.

After the game, they have been sticking around, waiting for Odhiambo, who has religiously been honouring them with greetings and little chats, as was the case after Kenya's 1-0 win over Morocco.

Apart from Odhiambo and his brother Tyson, Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, Gor Mahia defender Joshua Onyango, and former Kenya international Collins ‘Gatusso’ Okoth are some of the players whose skills and talents were nurtured at Baba Dogo Grounds.
