If Naibois win the Mozzart Bet Cup, they will make history as the first NSL team to represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup

Nairobi United moved within touching distance of history after a commanding 2-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz in the Mozzart Bet Cup quarterfinals held at the Dandora Stadium on Thursday, 1 May.

The result saw the National Super League (NSL) table toppers edge closer to becoming the first second-tier team to represent Kenya in a continental competition — the CAF Confederation Cup.

Nairobi United opener

Former Shabana FC forward Frank Ouya opened the scoring early in the third minute, finishing off a beautifully orchestrated move from midfield.

Isaac Omweri dazzled with a cheeky nutmeg before setting up Ouya, who rounded Homeboyz goalkeeper Ibrahim Wanjala to give Nairobi United a dream start.

Despite their early lead, Nairobi United kept probing, pressing high and pushing for a second, but failed to convert a series of chances.

On the other end, Homeboyz — 2023's Mozzart Bet Cup champions — struggled to break down a resolute Naibois backline.

Without their captain, Moses Mudavadi, the FKF Premier League side lacked spark in midfield, allowing United’s Omweri and Brian Magare to dominate.

Homeboyz striker Moses Shumah came close twice, but United goalkeeper Ernest Mohammed stood firm with impressive reflex saves.

Half time

Nairobi United went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

After the restart, the NSL side, already dubbed “giant slayers” for earlier wins over KCB and Tusker, looked hungry to claim another Premier League scalp.

Nairobi United double

And in the 51st minute, Omweri — the standout performer of the day — doubled their lead.

He started the move at the centre of the pitch, released Majaliwa Charo, who surged forward, and then coolly slotted home from a tight angle after receiving the return pass.

Homeboyz introduced Henry Omolo in an attempt to change the game, but the move had little effect.

Nairobi’s defense, marshalled by John Otieno and Jim Ouma, repelled every attack.

In the 73rd minute, Wanjala was forced into a brilliant save to deny Omweri his second and prevent further damage.

With time running out, Homeboyz pushed desperately for a consolation, but it never came.

The final whistle confirmed Nairobi United’s place in the semifinals — and kept alive their fairytale run towards continental football.

If they win the Mozzart Bet Cup, Nairobi United will make history as the first NSL team to represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup.
