The Speaker officially handed over the donation during a meeting with the club’s top brass, led by chairman Bonface Ambani and CEO Ronald Namai.
The session, held at his office in Nairobi, comes days after Wetang’ula graced the AFC Leopards Gala Dinner in Bungoma County, where he made the promise in a bid to rally broader legislative support for struggling football clubs.
"Today, I hosted a delegation of AFC Leopards officials. They briefed me on their ambitious plans to revamp the club, including scouting for talent in the ongoing secondary school games,” Wetang’ula revealed in a Facebook update.
“I challenged Members of Parliament to revisit the Sports Act to ensure a share of the Sports Fund is directly allocated to local clubs in financial distress. I fulfilled my Ksh1 million pledge to support the club’s revitalisation plan,” he continued.
Wetang’ula was joined at the meeting by a host of lawmakers, including Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, Kanduyi MP John Makali, Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali, and Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, underscoring growing political interest in the local football sphere.
In an additional boost, Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali contributed Ksh50,000 to the club, reaffirming parliamentary goodwill toward helping domestic teams stay afloat.
“Today the club received a boost of Ksh1 million from Speaker Wetang’ula and an extra Ksh50,000 from Hon. Bernard Shinali... Much was shared as we look forward to restoring the roar back at the den,” said club chairman Ambani in a post acknowledging the contributions.
Once a powerhouse in Kenyan football, AFC Leopards has in recent years battled dwindling fortunes both on and off the pitch, grappling with financial instability and inconsistent performances.
The new injection of funds is expected to bolster the club’s preparations ahead of the upcoming season, particularly in strengthening the playing unit and improving players' welfare.
Club officials revealed plans to invest part of the funds in player scouting and equipping the team with essential resources, with a view to positioning the 12-time Kenyan champions for a more competitive campaign locally and beyond.
