Stade Rennais are losing ground in the French championship as they let Montpellier creep up on them in the table
Stephy Avididi hit a 10-minute double to give Montpellier a vital victory against their European qualification rivals Stade Rennais.
It was an even game in which the visitors rallied in the second half, but despite throwing everything at goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, but were again left with question marks over their forward play. After their midweek defeat at home against Saint-Etienne in which they couldn’t find the net, their failings were again exposed. The home side had a perfect chance to wrap the game up shortly after the break, but Teji Savanier failed to score from a penalty.
A late Serhou Guirassy strike ensured a frantic 15 or so minutes towards the end, but Les Montpellierains held on to claim their third win in a row and get stuck into the battle for European places.
