Millions Harambee Stars banked from CAF after CHAN quarters finish

Kenya's men's national football team, Harambee Stars, walked home with millions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after their quarter-final finish.

In what was their debut, the Harambee Stars managed to reach the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

For their troubles, Kenya managed to earn $450,000 (Ksh58 million) from CAF as the share of each quarter finalist in the tournament.

The amount comes after CAF increased the total prize money for the 2024 CHAN by 32% to a record $10.4 million (approximately Ksh1.3 billion).

Of the Ksh1.3 billion is the 75% winner prize money increase from $2 million (approximately Ksh258 million) in the last edition to a current tune of $3.5 million (approximately Ksh451.5 million).

The tournament's runners-up will take home $1.2 million (approximately Ksh154.8 million) as compared to the $800,000 (approximately Ksh103.2 million) in the 2022 edition.

The semi-finalists are assured of $600,000 (approximately Ksh77.4 million) while the team that will finish third will be $700,000 (approximately Ksh90.3 million) richer.

Teams that finished third in groups that had five teams, as well as those that had four teams, will smile all the way to the bank to collect $300,000 (approximately Ksh38.7 million).

Fourth and fifth-placed teams in both groups that had four and five teams will be rewarded with $200,000 (approximately Ksh25.8 million).

Kenya were eliminated in the quarter-finals after losing to Madagascar in a match played on Friday, 22 August at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In the match played under floodlights, after a goalless first half, Kenya took the lead in the 48th minute when Alphonce Omija met Boniface Muchiri's free kick with a powerful header into the back of the net.

However, Madagascar hung on and got their reward in the 69th minute when Fenohasina Razafimaro scored from the penalty spot after Lewis Bandi handled in the box.

With the match ending at a stalemate both in regular and extra time, the match headed to penalties, where Madagascar won 4-3.
