Kenya is set to kick off its maiden appearance at the continental showpiece on August 3 against two-time champions DR Congo at Kasarani International Stadium.
Bajaber, who made his senior national team debut in March with a stunning goal against The Gambia in a World Cup qualifier, has spent the majority of the CHAN camp training individually under close supervision.
Concerns had emerged over his availability due to a minor knock, but McCarthy says the 22-year-old is responding well and remains firmly in the plans.
“Bajaber is very ready to be integrated into the team, but as a precaution, he’s training alone for now,” said McCarthy during a media briefing at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.
“We don’t want to rush players back; we’d rather take our time and ensure he heals properly. He’s one of those players that gives everything.”
The South African tactician, who has been in charge of four matches since his appointment earlier this year, stressed the coaching staff is doing all they can to have Bajaber available for selection.
“He’s working closely with the fitness coaches and doing all his jumping and strength sessions, so he’s not missing out on much,” McCarthy explained.
“Once we feel it’s the right time to bring him back into full group training, we’ll do it.”
McCarthy left the door open for Bajaber to be in contention for the opening match.
“Our goal is to have all of Kenya’s best players fit and ready to give us the best chance of winning every game. If there’s a possibility he can play in the first match, we want to make it happen.”
Off the pitch, Bajaber, popularly known as Starboy, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation.
Reports from Tanzania suggest that Simba SC has reached a full agreement with Kenya Police for his services.
The former Nairobi City Stars attacker played a crucial role in Police’s historic FKF Premier League title win last season.
