The Slum Boys welcomed the Mailmen in their first match of the season, staged on Monday, 22 September at the Kasarani Annex.

Mathare threw away a half-time lead after Elli Asieche had put them ahead from the spot and allowed Posta to complete a second-half comeback and secure a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from second-half substitutes Faustine Ojiambo and debutant Trevor Omondi.

Speaking to the media after the match, the former Harambee Stars assistant coach opened up on the first mistake that his team made in the match.

“It is a match that we did not deserve to lose. One thing that we did when we got the goal was that we dropped so much into our own 18-yard box, and that is where we got it wrong.

Dropping means that we were inviting the opponent into our own half, and I think, unlike the first half when we defended with forward players, we dropped in the second half and lost the plot,” said Kamau.

The former Thika United head coach also attributed the loss to the slow acclimatisation by the club’s new signings.

“We have some injections, and now it is important to ensure that the signings that we brought on board understand what we are doing.

That is one of the mistakes that we made. We need to make sure that the players we bring on board understand what we do,” added Kamau.

Some of the new signings who played include goalkeeper Kevin Ouru, Herit Mungai, Glenn Odhiambo and Dennis Okoth.

Next up for the 2008 league champions is an away match to Kamau’s former employers, KCB FC, on Friday, 26 September at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Lang’ata, where Mathare will be eying their first win of the season.
