The experienced tactician helped Sofapaka win their first and only league title in 2009
League-winning tactician Robert Matano has returned to the 2009 champions Sofapaka barely two days after parting ways with Tusker.
Matano left Tusker earlier in the week, under unclear circumstances, bringing his six-year stint at the Ruaraka-based outfit to an end.
Having won the league and finished in respectable positions in nearly all the seasons he was in charge at Tusker, Matano was expected to remain at the club.
However, the two parties opted to part ways opening the door for the veteran coach to seek fresh challenges heading to the new season.
With coaches required to produce CAF A badges to be allowed to man the touchline in the new season, Sofapaka moved in swiftly and captured Matano's signature.
Ezekiel Akwana, who helped Sofapaka retain their top flight status in the relegation/promotion playoff, couldn't have led the club in the new season as the former international is yet to acquire his CAF A license.
Matano is not new to the Sofapaka family as he made history 15 years ago when he led the club to it's first and only league title in what was debut season in the top tier.
Back then, he had helped the club secure automatic promotion to the top tier before taking the top tier by storm where they dethroned Mathare United.
Matano faces an uphill task of rebuilding at Sofapaka as the outfit lost a couple of the best players in the past season and the need for replacements and depth can't be ignored.
He will also have to bring in a new assistant whose credentials meet the set requirements- CAF B license.
Restoring the lost glory at the club is certainly the difficult task Sofapaka flirted with relegation for the better part of the past campaign and their general performance in recent years hasn't been impressive.
