Matano, who was appointed at the end of last season to replace the suspended and later dismissed head coach Patrick Odhiambo, has been tasked with rebuilding the Bankers.
Determined to challenge for silverware in the 2025/26 season, KCB emerged as one of the most active clubs in the transfer market, bringing in several reinforcements to strengthen their quest for a maiden top-flight trophy.
After weeks of intensive training in Kenya, the team crossed over to Tanzania for a crucial bonding and match-preparation camp.
On Tuesday, they faced Tanzania Prisons, coached by former Harambee Stars boss Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno, and secured a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Kelvin Etemesi and December Kisaka. Matano praised the steady progress of his squad.
“This is our first match outside the country, and as you know, we have many new players. They are bonding well, and today’s game showed that the players are already coming together.
The team is gelling, and if we maintain this momentum, it will set us up nicely for the season,” he told the club’s media.
Reflecting on the clash against Prisons, Matano admitted it was a stern test but lauded his side’s technical approach.
“It was a very tough match, but we managed to play good football. We were more technical with the ball, and the players showed improved understanding of each other’s style. That is a big step forward,” he noted.
The seasoned tactician emphasised the importance of the Tanzania camp in fostering team unity, adapting to his philosophy, and aligning with the club’s objectives.
“My aim is to put the players together and ensure they fully understand my style of play as well as our collective goal as a team.
The bonding process also helps them appreciate each other better and align with what the management expects from us,” he explained.
Matano also expressed gratitude to the club hierarchy for supporting the camp.
“We appreciate the management for facilitating this outing outside the country for the first time.
It is a very important step for the team, and it will go a long way in preparing us for the challenges ahead,” he added.
KCB FC will open their 2025/26 FKF Premier League campaign with a tough away fixture against Tusker FC on Saturday, 20 September.
